driftwood-Band Bio
Driftwood’s two key musicians, Rob Parise and Karl Uftring, began performing together during the late ‘80’s in various incarnations on Long Island, NY. The styles of their early efforts were as wide as the array of music the two count as their influences.
In the following years, Rob and Karl continued to experiment with various musical styles as they honed their technical skills. That culmination of studies and appreciation of a wide variety of sub genres of music is evident in the creation of Driftwood.
Driftwood’s music is in a category unto itself. It is a music that can be appreciated by all, no matter what genre of music the listener may consider themselves a fan of. It is a music that speaks to the human condition.
After playing in and around Richmond and Central Virginia during 2002, and after an enthusiastic response at the summer festival on Martha’s Vineyard, Karl and Rob began writing and rehearsing for their debut EP, Ruins and Landscapes.
The new EP is comprised of songs which are rightly combined with visuals of construction, or more likely, deconstruction. As their lyrical and musical content merges to build emotion in the listener, it also reduces and takes apart any preconceived notions regarding the current state of popular music.
In the meantime, Driftwood has been touring up and down the East Coast with the intention of getting their music out to as many people as possible. They have supported such acts as Tony Rice, Peter Rowan and most recently Jason Mraz and Fighting Gravity. They were recently chosen by The Icono Fan Network as their Unsigned Heroes with an interview featured on www.rocknworld.com. Keavin Wiggins of the Icono Fan Network calls Driftwood, “a dynamic duo…Driftwood finds a musical middle ground that allows them to create a diverse collection of songs…” Richmond.com says, “Driftwood’s songs slip and slide through acoustic and electric, florid and spare arrangements, but all convey the same earnestness and unrest that strives for epic and universal proportions”. Jeff Gunton of newhopepa.com adds, “(Driftwood’s) music is both meaningful and refreshing, as well as artistically unique and technically excellent. This troubled world needs more Driftwood!”
Driftwood is now scheduling dates and touring in support of Ruins and Landscapes, which was released in April, 2002. Following the tour, Driftwood will return to
the studio to record more original material. The much-anticipated follow-up
should be available in 2003.
