Artist History
Just in time for the new millennium, 1999 saw the return of punjabi by nature's joyous world-flavoured dance music. The album RAISE THE ROOF was released through FESTIVAL DISTRIBUTION with a video for the first single, Dancin' With The Rainbow. The summer of the year 2000 sees pbn taking the party to Canada and the US as they will be raising roofs on tour.punjabi by nature is anything but typical in nature. Spawned in 1993 by singer/songwriter Tony Singh, pbn finds a common denominator between the dance music Singh was influenced by as a youth, and the bhangra sounds that he grew up with. Downsizing to a seven-piece music machine, complete with guitar, bass, drums, percussion, keyboards and a rapper, pbn has become synonymous with energetic fun.The end of 1995 was celebrated by the release of pbn’s full-length debut album, JMPN FOR JOY, which also went on to be one of the nominees for the Best Global Recording at the 1996 JUNO AWARDS. A video for the single, Dance With PBN also landed them a nomination for the Global Groove Award at the 1996 MUCHMUSIC VIDEO AWARDS. JMPN FOR JOY was also released in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands through WESTPARK MUSIC.Their first cassette, GOONDA GARDI, garnered the band the prestige of being voted one of NOW MAGAZINE’s Top Ten releases of 1993. The TORONTO STAR bestowed upon pbn the honour of one of the Top Five live performances of 1994, and the following year, named punjabi by nature Most Promising Artist of 1995.You may have caught pbn on one of their numerous national television performances. However, live gigs are what they’re known for — from the DU MAURIER JAZZ FESTIVAL and the VANCOUVER FOLK FESTIVAL to the DAYS OF ACTION concert and FIRST NIGHT, they’ve played to as many as 300,000 people at a time. pbn have taken their dance rythms stateside having played the U.S. east coast many times, including New York City’s Central Park in the summer of ’97, with TUATARA. If you ask the band it’s most memorable moment, they’d probably tell you that opening for the BEASTIE BOYS in ’94 was a dream come true.If pbn get to you, making you want to get up and party, it’s just in their nature. |
