Press Reviews
The Dark Side: review by BB Kers, Here is something totally different. Joan Chisera plays vilolin accompanied by something resembling electronic jazz fusion. This is good and relaxing stuff. She really kicks in after about 2:40. I especially enjoy the violin playing since I have played 10 years myself. This is a different style - a bit sad tragic stuff resembling a gypsy somewhere in the Transyvanian mountains of Hungary/Romania. Excellent sound production - the only irritating thing was one sound in the beginning of the song that I also have on my Roland and does not work for me. I cannot describe how it sounds or why?? OK - I think this is totally original stuff and wish you the best of luck. The verdict: Production: 5 of 5 Originality: Without a doubt - gypsy stuff Lyrics - none Musical style: I am no big fan of jazz- but this seemed good and technically brilliantly executed posted 11-28-99 01:40 PM ................ ................ Joan, I am listening to your compositions on HI-FI and have downloaded all of your selections. My Favorite: 1. Other Eyes 2. Awake at Last 3. Siren 4. The Dark side 5. Tribal Talk 6. Dinosaur Dance and the rest Composition: In search of New and exciting music we plunge in the World of Fusion. Joan's style shows her basic training in Classical violin performance and explorations in the World of List, Bartok, Jean Luke Ponty, for the ones who do not know this last artist, his World is an explosion of genuine inspired movement captured by a fingertip on a string. Joan, reaches as far as folk elaboration, which proves her love for the instrument it self. The artist considers her style as Jazz Fusion although some of her pieces border New Age and World Fusion. To be precise is impossible, since she changes manners of fingering with almost every piece of her selection, which is admirable and shows versatility of style required to convey an idea or a feeling. Critique: Although Joan has an amazing capacity to glide through 32nd notes and triplets with an almost virtuoso easiness some of the harmonies she creates are unintentionally broken by slightly misplaced fingering (the finale of "Awake at Last") It is a Great task to be able to incorporate the most accurate percussion with the sound of a violin. It's sound is SO DEMANDING. As far as a general composition goes, Joan has done a Great job at it. I can just see them siting and editing MIDI drum tracks for hours. I would love to hear them with actual drum sets and selected World percussion, since MIDI tends to ride sharper than the soft analogs, one can hear it above the rest. Opinion: Joan's compositions are full and completed as an idea. They can take a micron of an additional instrumentation and technical recording skill. Overall: Joan's music Is an inspiration to listener and performer, simultaneously. She has the uncanny ability to drive forward smiling all the way. Great Work! With Respect: Crow Knee |
