Press Reviews
"It's very rare to get a new band's tape and have it not remind you of some other artist. Frelic's five-song first recording comes across as a rock alternative to most everything being done locally. It is entirely hard to comapre this group to others. Stylistically, the band's sound is a bit jangly - like early R.E.M. or the Smiths, combined with a hint of Sonic Youth guitar noodling and Neil Young-like these-guitars-go-to-eleven overdrive. And then there's the vocalist. His delivery is sincere, if not passionate. His voice sounds new, but his emotional outpouring reminds me of Ed Kowlczyk, the lead singer from Live. The lyrics seem cryptic, and with song titles like "Father Christmas," "Bittersweet Life" and "Wake Up Angel," it's a mystery what's going on in his head. Frelic is a moody good time, and the really have a great sound that will only improve with age (some of these guys can't even vote yet). If anybody knows who these folks are, ask them to phone me and explain what a Frelic is."
