Artist History
The bass is fifty years olds and stands tall amongst the tattered chairs
adorning the small furniture upholstery shop. It is the instrument of music
which Bruce Woody has proudly used for more than a half of cntury.
Soft melodic notes vibrate though-out the shop as Woody goes about
the task of restoring beauty into some old ancient sofa, he is by all means
a musician ,a true lover of the art, but by chance or destiny he is also a
craftsman.Bruce Woody's odyssey into the world of music began at the
tender age of nine. Born on March 19th, 1926 in Harrisburg Virginia he migrated
from the South to Columbus, Ohio at fifteen years of age.At first Woody picked
up the drums.Grandually he evolved to thr guitar and finally settled for the bass.
By seventeen he had run away from home to play music with Ida Cox's and the
darktown Scandals a minstrel show very popular in the golden age of rythmn and blues.
America had not yet established it's musical identity .Jazz had just began to
receive a sense of respectability and R&B was in it's experimental stage.
Woody leaped feet first into the fray of the musical times and with likes of
Ground Hog ,[a popular dance] Nick and Tic and the two Chicks,Silk and Satin,
Chuck berry and a host of others; they began to lay the foundation for what we
know today as R&B and rock and roll.Woody flashes that toothy smile and reminiscences
about the time of innocence,"Chuck Berry was the leader of us all.
Imean white and black.Without Chuck there wouldn't have been an Elvis. |
