Artist description
James "Sunny Jim" White
Singer/Songwriter with the Tropical Touch
James "Sunny Jim" White spent more than a decade living the island lifestyle as the artist-in- residence at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, one of the finest resorts in the Caribbean. The years spent down island have given Sunny Jim the laid-back outlook on life reflected in his original music. At home in Sarasota, FL, he is rediscovering his roots and playing for audiences all over the U.S. who have waited a long time to hear him live.
Sunny Jim's one-man show is presented with a tropical flair and it includes an exciting mix of other musical styles. He sings and plays guitar and steel drum, and he is supported by a computerized MIDI musical setup. From ballads to fun-loving, upbeat Soca tunes, his original songs tell stories of life on a Caribbean island, and they win him fans every day. James' first album, Postcards from Seven Mile Beach, was produced and recorded in Grand Cayman in 1990, and it has recently been re-issued as a compact disc. His second CD, Life in the Laidback Lane, features "Blame it on the Rum," a song that he wrote for the major motion picture "The Firm." James also made an appearance in the movie, and earned a film credit. The title song for Life in the Laidback Lane remains one of Sunny Jim's most requested numbers. In his latest CD, Sandbar Serenade, James again draws from his own life experiences to write the tracks. The compact disc includes, "Splendid Adventurer," a song about sailing adventures in the Windward Islands with close friend Capt. Phil Jones of St. Vincent, West Indies. "Fishing in the Milky Way" was written after a night of fishing with a friend aboard James' beloved sailboat Little Victory. "Ja' maica Me Crazy," is an upbeat reggae song that reflects local influences. "Rainmaker" also included in Sandbar Serenade, won grand prize in the Cayman National Songwriting Competition. Sunny Jim also received a songwriting award for the title song on Postcards from Seven Mile Beach. In addition to his own original songs, Sunny Jim's repertoire includes traditional Caribbean tunes, and the musical influence of such artists as Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Jerry Jeff Walker, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder and the Beatles.
Sunny Jim's original songs are played regularly on Jimmy Buffett's Radio Margaritaville, an internet radio station which can be found at www.margaritaville.com. Radio Margaritaville traveled to the Cayman Islands last year to broadcast his show live to a world-wide audience, an experience that has inspired a new song for Sunny Jim's next CD. A favorite for Parrot Head parties, Sunny Jim has been one of the featured performers for the national parrothead convention "Meeting of the Minds." The convention is held each Fall in Key West, FL, and Sunny Jim's venues in 1998 and 1999 have included Sloppy Joe's Eatery, Rick's Dirty Harry's and the Hog's Breath Cafe. He has also been a featured performer for "Riddles in the Sand," a parrothead gathering hosted by the Galveston Bay Area Parrot Head Club. Sunny Jim has also entertained the Parrotheads at pre-concert tailgate parties in Atlanta and Houston. His 2000 summer tour included shows in Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, South Carolina and Texas.
Sunny Jim is also available for private parties, corporate group events and conventions. During his tenure at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, a choice resort destination for the incentive market, he regularly entertained groups from all over the world at banquets and other special events.
