Artist description
The Band
For years, the band "The Price of Dope"
enjoyed a great deal of success and respect
on the local San Diego music scene. Aside
from working with such acts as The Artist
Formerly Known as Prince, The Long Beach
DUB Allstars, Roots, and The Brand New
Heavies, the group had featured Harold
Todd of Lennie Kravitz fame, and Robert
Walters of the Greyboy Allstars in their
own work. The band held the no.1 spot in
the San Diego charts for 6 consecutive
weeks, and was frequently heard on Blue
Torch surf videos.
In early 2002, when the band finally split
up, drummer Jeff Kelley, guitarist Andy
Holmes, and organist/pianist Gianni Staiano
came together to form a new recording project.
The end result was Pocket. After building
a studio from the ground up, the group joined
up with bassist Patrick Marion and started
recording. There was such a positive energy
between members, and the recordings came out
so well that it was decided to make Pocket a
working group. In early 2003, their debut
EP The Tone Conservancy was released.
Consisting of fiery, innovative grooves inspired
by a blend of 1960's soul jazz and contemporary
rhythms and harmonies, the album has been
extremely well received all over the San Diego
area.
Spurred on by this response, Pocket is currently playing clubs such as The Whistle Stop, Winston's, Blind Melons, Humphrey's Backstage Lounge, and The Copa. The next step, as seen by the band, is to get back into the studio to turn out a new album each year, and to hit the road so as many people as possible can be moved by their instrumental groove music.
