Artist description
I was born Oct 11th 1984 raised in the US, Queens New York. Both my parents and grandparents were born in Guyana and then came over to New York. I studied Telecommunications and Network Administration at Thomas A. Edison High School where I later got my diploma and graduated. I’m now enrolled in Queens College taking up my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science with my minor being philosophy. I’m currently running a computer business, which specializes in building, repairing and upgrading of computers. After college I plan to continue developing my computer business and become a network administrator. I also plan to take my studies of classical indian music further and delve into the heart of it. I have been playing Sitar for two years and I have been singing classical indian for about six years under the guidance of my guru’s Kinnar Ji, Payal Ji and Manu Ji.
I sang with the group from our school, “Sangeet Vilas- Kinnar School of Music,” in numerous shows in Long Island and Queens, including International Music Nights at Eisenhower Park and a memorial for the 911 victims, which also took place at Eisenhower Park. I have played sitar at numerous different church events and shows as well. Many people ask me which I prefer doing, singing or playing Sitar; I do enjoy doing both of them, but sitar I would have to say is my preference. When I practice sitar there are times when I can sit and play for a few hours and times I can only play for fifteen minutes, that’s usually when school is in session. My practice routine for sitar usually involves an hour of rigorous playing, everyday.
When I was younger I listened strictly to music by Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Gulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, and Lata Mangeshkar. To this day classical and oldies music still remains my preferred type of music. I also listen Trance, Fusion, and anything between the two. Some of my favorite artists include Talvin Singh, DJ Tiesto, DJ Sinister, and DJ Mike.
I started DJ’ing about two years ago when two of my friends, Big Jay and Sunil, said I should go for it and so I did. It nearly became effortless due to all of the music guidance I have had with my guru’s. I don’t do as much remixing as I used to do partly because I’m currently working on a project where I’m producing trance and fusion pieces, embedding bits of Tabla, Sitar and Tanpura into it, creating something unique. I hope to release the album within the next year, entitled “ Tabla Storm- The Sentinel Invasion.” Another project I’ve been working on is my radio station, “Curry Radio.” It’s basically a 24/7 radio station I started up, commercial free with all the best of Indian, Reggae, Soca, and Chutney music.
As a DJ and musician I’m out to help promote and bring about more recognition for my culture, particularly the music part. How? By bringing back the oldies and promoting the new music. I want to introduce more of our music to other cultures through DJ’ing and any other means possible so that it’s easily relayed to society. |
