Artist History
Formed in the basement of a nondescript home in Mansfield, Ohio in early 1996, the members of THE GC5, like so many of their contemporaries, set out to beat the boredom of suburbia. The band quickly honed their songwriting skills and have developed into something rarely found since the glory days of punk rock - an articulate and compelling voice for social and political discontent. Influenced by the drive and urgency of late 70's British Punk, Chuck Berry guitar riffs, and the melody and bitterness of Elvis Costello, THE GC5 deliver raucous street punk and balls to the wall rock'n roll - complete with fierce guitars and catchy fist raising anthems- without the thuggish and phony right wing populism that plagues the modern Oi! movement.
After releasing their debut full-length "Kisses From Hanoi' in July 2000, a year and a half of constant touring ensued, during which they played over 250 shows and shared the stage with scene stalwarts The Dropkick Murphys, The Bouncing Souls, Swinging Utters, The Gadjits, and Agnostic Front. Somehow THE GC5 managed to find time to release a 5 song ep 'Horseshoes and Hand Grenades' and a singles collection that spanned 1997 to 2000.
'Never Bet The Devil Your Head' is the bands 4th record (2nd full length), and the THE GC5, who are barely twenty, know their roots. Recorded in their home town - Cleveland, Ohio - and produced by Ryan Foltz of the Dropkick Murphys (who also plays organ and mandolin on the record) - themes of working class pride, left side politics and antiestablishment outrage run rampant. The record is filled with concrete and candor, with nods to the pure roots of rock and roll; "Tear Down The Town" and "Straight Outta Luck" are perfect examples of the bands "off the hook" aggressiveness. Countered by Doug McKean's ability to stretch the band to something very close to balladry, with "Lies and Prophecies" and "When All Else Fails" giving the album an impressive dynamic. The band has it all; power, charm, sincerity, talent, and an uncompromised DIY work ethic. "Brothers and Sisters"... THE GC5!!! |
