    Artist History
Alchemy are an explosive new British band that have mixed music of the utmost originality with styles such as rock and funk to create an exciting sound for any avid music fan. Led by lead singer Nick Tree and guitarist Tom Mitchell they have recorded three EPs to date with the help of drummer Simon Mitchell, bass player Trevor Boxall and a number of other accomplished musicians. Alchemy formed when Nick and Tom met whilst doing part time work in a cinema. Both were studying for A-levels and had a huge interest in music - Tom was studying it at the time and Nick was in the middle of experimenting with different bands. After the two got talking they realised that as well as a friendship, a potential music duo was also being formed. Nick had been writing songs for a while and after showing Tom some of his ideas they quickly worked on revamping them, turning them into more polished and structured pieces. Tom introduced Nick to other music besides the commercial rock bands that Nick favoured at the time and they decided together that they would revolve their music heavily around the acoustic guitar. As both were experienced guitarists they were quickly able to develop their music from a clichéd chordal style into a much more upbeat funky sound that relied a great deal on the interaction of their two guitar parts. Nicks vocals perfectly complemented this sound with a voice that was emotional and yet very diverse in its usage. After completing several songs together, the two started to show what they had written to friends and family and were encouraged by the universally positive feedback they received. This convinced them to write more and more songs and the need to perform them in public beckoned. Nick and Tom started to take their acoustic act round venues drawing in many fans intrigued with the original upbeat acoustic sound they had created. Tom and Nick both went to University but made a promise to keep the music going. During their first year they recorded an EP The Acoustic Demo Sessions in Toms studio containing seven of their songs. Once finished, the EP was distributed among fans, friends and family and it again received an overwhelmingly positive response. However Nick and Tom had always wanted to bring in more instruments and form an entire band so Tom recruited Andy Davies and Jack Egglestone, two jazz students studying the bass guitar and the drums at the Welsh College of Music. After having several rehearsals the band ventured back into the studio and recorded The Studio Sessions, a four track demo of the whole band. At this time geographical difficulties led to a change in the rhythm section with Simon Mitchell and Trevor Boxall taking on the roles of drummer and bassist respectively. Simon was Toms younger brother and along with Trevor had been part of another successful local band called Tubal Cain. As experienced musicians the two were quickly able to take on the challenge of developing Alchemys songs and have both contributed greatly to the recordings, bringing their own individual styles into the mix. Toms recording fingers were getting itchy once again and soon Alchemy wanted to get back in the studio to record another EP, this time adding instruments such as the flute, saxophone, electric guitar, percussion and piano. The result of much hard work is Alchemys latest work What Happens When... ? This is an EP that touches upon many genres including rock, funk, pop and even reggae and yet it maintains a constant thread joining all these different styles together. Since the band started Alchemy has made a concerted effort to keep control of everything that goes on within the band. As well as recording their own CDs they design their own artwork, produce their CDs and distribute them through friends and family. Although Alchemy are aware that there could come a time when it would become impossible to keep doing everything themselves they at least want to try for as long as possible Tom and Nicks time at university is almost up and they are both looking forward to getting back to their music on a full time basis. The next step on the road to recognition is likely to be a university tour in the autumn of 2003 which is being developed in conjunction with a plan to steer the music industry away from the manufactured pop groups and back towards the raw talented bands that have been neglected in recent years!!
