Artist History
What is this thing called AMATEUR NIGHT????
(a biography abridged)
Formed from the jagged shards of bands passed, Amateur Night have quietly risen to the top of San Francisco’s steaming mound of new groups. Relying on terminally catchy hooks and primal pop sensibility, the happy-go-sucky foursome have carved out quite a niche for themselves in the city’s ever-competitive club scene.
Hot off a 27 date national tour in support of their``Kneeling Before Zod’’ EP (which, by the way, was produced by Michael Rosen, best known for his work on Rancid’s “And Out Come The Wolves”) Amateur Night headed back into the studio to cut the self-titled debut you’re listening to and loving right now with producer Todd Herfindal of local pop gods Blue Sky Roadster. Dedication to song craftsmanship was paramount in making ``Amateur Night,’’ as were the almighty hook and harmony, lyrical honesty and pursuing the all American good time at all costs.
Amateur Night make no lofty claims of musical inventiveness. That’s not to say they’re some crappy Bar Mitzvah cover band, but rather a tip of the chapeau to their varied influences-some punk, some folk, all rock. Though the hooks will yank you in and force you to stay there at least until you’ve finished your cocktail, what sets Amateur Night well apart from any would-be peers is the fun implicit in everything they do.
WITNESS the ear to ear grins on-stage, HEAR the rarified sounds of true American rock, STUDY the legions of pogoing fans, PLUG your ears ‘cause they play really loud, TELL the doorman you’re on the list and STAND center stage as the Amateur Night experience awakens you from your coma of pretentious art rock and forgettable radio drone. Let Amateur Night remind you why this whole rock pursuit began so many years back-for a hoot, a holler and a headache the next morning.

Demorama.com – August 1999
Amateur Night: 11 Song CD.
If you like early Goo Goo Dolls (and I do), this joint might be up yer alley. Lotsa hooks well recorded, well played, with plenty of infectious enthusiasm. My kinda stuff. Put these guys on a bill with Cheap Trick and color me there! (Gerhard Vogel)
