Artist description
If the Hang Ups' sweet tooth-soothing 1993
debut,
He's After Me, is the sound of tentative, innocent
youth--bristling first love, summer car rides with
top down, starry-eyed sky-gazing et al.--and their
more wintry, wistful follow-up, 1997's So We Go,
captures the exquisite ennui of coming-of-age,
then their latest long-player, Second Story--which
juxtaposes the band's trademark breezy, blissed-
out pop with a fistful of rough 'n' tumble riffage
and attitudinal boogie-rockers--finds these four
Minneapolis lads all grown up. |

Artist History
The Hang Ups formed in the Summer of 1988 after
the founding members Brian Tighe, Jeff Kearns and
Steve Ittner met at the Minneapolis College of Art
and Design. In 1993, after playing the local bar
scene for a while, they signed a deal with Twin Tone
records, original home of The Replacements, Soul
Asylum and The Jayhawks. They recorded their first
record, "He's After Me" with Ed Ackerson of Polara, and received
much critical acclaim and reached the top ten in
the college charts. They followed up with "So We Go"
recorded by Bryan Hanna, a popular Minneapolis
producer.
Now the Hang Ups have completed "Second Story,"
their most ambitous and epic recording to date,
produced by Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, the
legendary duo that gave us REM's finest records,
"Reckoning" and "Murmur." |
