Artist description
With his deep, resonant voice, percussive guitar work, and passionate
lyrics, its no wonder listeners are engaged by Syd’s music. His powerful acoustic pop/rock style has cultivated a consistent, devoted fan base as evidenced by the 200,000 plus plays received on Mp3.com in less than a year. On stage, Syd's charismatic personality coupled with his authenticity and unbridled soul blend to produce an unforgettable show, evoking the mood and melody of music moguls like Ani DiFranco, Counting Crows, and Dave Matthews.
Syd was born and raised in a small town in Vermont, and schooled within the pastoral confines of the town. Syd began playing the drums at the age of 12. At 15 he added the guitar to his musical repertoire and began writing his own songs. Syd self-released his first recordings at the age of 17 on the Internet using school grant money and a four-track recorder. His initial Internet release was immediately answered with the encouraging demand for more from listeners and critics alike. Mp3.com alone sold hundreds of copies of his initial solo acoustic release. Frequent visits to New York City and life with a single mother caused Syd to develop well beyond his years. “He’s sophisticated, he’s very mature and he’s all of twenty years old.” (Mp3.com)
Syd then headed off to Boston to study New Media and Marketing at Emerson College. It was there that Syd crossed paths with drummer Jason Gardner, a native New Yorker with experience as a touring musician, studio musician and a producer. The pair hit it off and set a goal to create an “indie” album.
In a mere three months the motivated musicians, Syd and Jason, created their debut collaborative album, “Week Days Weak Knees”. They completed the record out of Jason’s Boston apartment in less than two weeks with under a five hundred-dollars. In order to maintain creative control and remain untainted by the corporate hand the CD was self-released on-line. “Week Days Weak Knees” instantly received exceptional reviews and impressive sales, moving as high as #2 in sales on Mp3.com and still remains a top selling CD. It’s easy to see why. “[Syd] has the most beautifully simple melodies that turn into powerful folk pop tunes that can’t be reckoned with…his lyrics are just untouchable.” (GodsofMusic.com). Because of its success, other online retailers such as Awarestore.com picked up the CD.
Syd has built a solid fan base without spending a penny on promotions or marketing. His success has been a result of relentless live performances and the Internet. The demand for more Syd music has made way to the emergence of online trading of Syd’s live show recordings. Syd broadened his unyielding support by bringing his talents to California in the summer months of 2002. He will continue to carve a niche in the college market as he becomes increasingly heard from coast to coast. A consistent gig schedule will allow the music to grow, and the music is what it’s all about.
