Press Reviews
S.F Chronicle, September 23 1998
by James Sullivan, SF Chronicle staff writer:
``The majority of my audience is American,'' says Simon Dray, a Frenchman who DJs the Thursday night show ``FM French Connection -- Bistro Radio'' on KUSF. A singer-songwriter by trade who performs regularly at Cafe Bastille and Prevot's, Dray commemorates the 20th anniversary of Brel's death with tributes October 2 at Alliance Francaise and October 9 at Piaf's.
INSPIRED BY JACQUES BREL
Besides ``Seasons in the Sun,'' Brel is best-known to English-speaking audiences as the subject of the '60s Broadway smash ``Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris,'' as well as adaptations such as ``If You Go Away,'' popularized by Glen Campbell, and ``Amsterdam,'' sung by David Bowie.
``Thanks to Brel, I survived in this country,'' says the heavily accented Dray, who first came to San Francisco 20 years ago -- the year Brel died.
``I spent many years singing on the street in Fisherman's Wharf, and people recognize the melodies.''
