Artist History Way back in 1999, Lamar Mauldin (bass) was contacted by a friend of his about doing some folk songs at a benefit concert for a mutual friend. He was originally going to play a couple of songs with just him and his flat top guitar. He decided to contact a friend of his and broaden his act a bit. Troy Shadley (rhythm guitar and lead vocals) was that friend. After jamming together the two decided to include another friend by the name of Wesley Short. Wesley mentioned that he knew a drummer (Johnny Wilson) and Troy mentioned that he knew a lead player (Tony Wheeler). They all got together the next weekend and jammed. The chemistry was apparent and Lamar's folk number was changed to a bonafide band doing three songs. They practiced for a few weeks and played the gig. It went great. People really seemed to respond. After the gig, the guys decided to hang together and try this "band" thing for awhile. They practiced for a couple months learning songs and really started sounding like a band. Wesley Short, the other rhythm player ran into some personal stuff and had to step down so we were short a guitar player. Troy called up a long time friend, Jamie Cox and told him to come try out. He tried out the next weekend, and the band quickly recruited him. At that point, Tony Wheeler told the band that he had an uncle who hung out at Allen's over in Normal Town, Athens, and he thought he could get the band a gig. He did and the band began playing at Allen's on a fairly regular basis. After a couple shows there, Jamie had to leave the band due to some personal issues and they were again short a guitar player. Tangents decided not to replace Jamie as Troy could handle the rhythms and Tangents became a four piece. A couple of years and alot of small shows later, Johnny Wilson had to leave the group due to having too much going on with the band and his family. Scott Kelly took his place, and the band is as strong as ever. They play down at the Cadillac Country Club in Winder for the most part these days. Still having a ball. This story will continue...
