    Artist History
Some might say avelar came into being when three guys lost in the wilderness that is L.A.’s music scene got together in the early part of 2002 to work out a few tunes in a nondescript Culver City rehearsal space. However, those in the know will tell you that things actually began a year or more earlier... December of 2000 to be precise. After several years of slogging about the local club circuit with a couple of different groups, including local indie faves The Bread Hoarders, Andrew Spitser sensed the time was right for a change. He resigned his English teaching position at a local high school, pulled the plug on things with his then current band, and locked himself in his room. For the next year or so, cocooned in a small home studio with an old hand-me-down 4-track, an array of guitars, amps, effects pedals, an old Yamaha keyboard and some percussion, he started playing. The more he played, the more he wrote. The more he wrote, the more he played. Gradually the sound that would come to define avelar took shape. Finally, in late 2001, Andrew emerged from his apartment, squinted into the sunlight, got the hell back to work as a sub, and headed out into the world armed with a whole series of songs he had committed to tape during this time of self-imposed exile. It was time to put together a band. Through a mysterious series of events, a few of these recordings fell into the hands of bassman Kevin Hite, who had this to say about his entry into the band: "There was some brilliant stuff on those tapes and I wanted to be part of it. I could tell that we were moving in a similar direction musically so I rang Andrew and told him I thought we needed to play. Things clicked and we sort of became a band. They haven't fired me yet." Shortly thereafter the pair had the good fortune of meeting Grammy-nominated Producer/ Engineer extraordinaire Jamie Cerniglia. On his own after a long gig at L.A.’s The Village Recorder, Jamie was looking for a band to work with, liked what he heard, and agreed to contribute both time and talent to helping avelar deliver their debut record. The band spent the better part of 2002 in the rehearsal and recording studios, finding their sound and laying down tracks for their debut record L.P. No. 1. It was during this time that former bass player and drummer wunderkind Martin Avelar, whose moniker the band still carries, was forced to relocate, leaving the guys one drummer short. Once again Jamie came through, passing along a tape to Andrew Loeser, who he knew from producing and engineering albums by APL's previous band, Colorwall. The three met for the aforementioned introductory jam session, and before the hour was up, the final incarnation of avelar was complete. With the year coming to a close and the record ready to print, the boys headed out to play shows, hitting Spaceland, The Joint, Zen Sushi, The Garage, 14 Below, and other venues. 2003 will see the band continue to hit the road in support of the record, both within and without the greater L.A. area. As APL said about joining, “I had to get involved with this band. I mean, especially with the state of music today, I knew right away that this was a musical voice that had to be heard.” We intend to make that happen.
