Artist History
Waiting for Brantley is a rock quartet whose roots derive from the small town of Laurel, Mississippi. The band's beginnings start in February of 2002 when guitarist Eric Johnson asked a few friends to start a new band with him. The friends included Eric Asmar(drummer from Johnson's previous band), and Josh Gavin(the bass player for another local band at the time). The band began writing material with another one of Johnson's friends who filled the spot of vocals. The band then decided to add a rhythm guitar player, Steven Holland, to give Johnson more freedom to expand the music by adding more lead guitar elements and vocal harmonies. After two months of writing and rehearsing, the band decided to part ways from their current singer and look for another. Not having to look very far, Steven stepped up and seemed to fill the void perfectly. Gavin explains, "I didn't even know the guy could sing. He just kind of took charge and led us into a direction we were all happy with."
The band began writing new material. Unlike much of their old, the new songs were a little less punk rock and little more "emo" alternative rock. "I think our music has a theme," explains Holland. "A perfect example would be like this thin line between anger and happiness It's like our music tries to capture the way that every amount of ugliness has a pretty side and vice versa. Thats basically what we try and express in our songs." The band notes the musical influences of current acts such as the Used, Flickerstick, Radiohead, Third Eye Blind, etc.
In December of 2002, the group had played enough live shows to cut their first 4 song demo in a small studio in Collins, Mississippi. The demo included the tracks, Lately, Don't Bother, Life you left behind, and Just Drive. Currently, the group is working on their 7 song EP at Riverside Studios in Moselle, Mississippi with local engineer, Mark Black, with Glenn Sasser. The album will be cleverly entitled "Letting out violent energy."
The most frequently asked question is "how did you get the name waiting for brantley?" The name came from a friend of the band who was forced into drug rehabilitation in January of 2003. The band was currently looking for a name, so they decided to borrow their friends name along with the situation by naming themselves waiting for brantley. W4B is notorious for their energetic live show and addictive songwriting skills, and they have every intention of introducing their music to the masses.
