Artist description
The Sophomore Effort (formerly known as Closure) is a five-piece band hailing from Tampa, Florida. Comprised of veterans of the Tampa music scene including ex members of Slap of Reality, Balance, Tomorrow and Hankshaw, they are no strangers to making great music. Armed with an impressive resume including 4 full length LP’s, over a half dozen 7" EP’s, multiple compilation tracks, 4 North American tours, and 1 headlining European tour, The Sophomore Effort is anxious to carry on what their previous bands have started. Since their inception in early 1999, The Sophomore Effort has been producing song after song of melodic, guitar driven music ala Samiam, Sense Field, and Jimmy Eat World. With an ear for melody and knack for writing the perfect hook, The Sophomore Effort is making an immediate impact on the local music scene and beyond. They have been featured in the Florida music bible "Focus" magazine, sold out of their self produced 4 song debut CD, contributed tracks on multiple complilations, movie soundtracks, and have 2 split LP’s due out in early 2002. However, the strength of this band lies in their live performance. Combining a blend of up tempo melodic hardcore with moody, emo evoking swings, The Sophomore Effort whips an audience into a frenzy only to drop the feeling back down with seamless effort. No energy is left untapped during their live set. |

Press Reviews
Four nearly perfect tracks of dynamic, melodic, extremely timely postcore from a quintet of DIY vets. Any cynics who find Closure’s sound a little too conveniently punctual should note that four of these five guys were edging toward this catchy, riffy style at least five years ago in Balance. Here, any misgivings about what might not be ‘punk’ are cast aside in the search for the perfect marriage of hook and energy, with very satisfying results. Guitarists Joe Kiser and David Peralta alternately gnash and flow, engaging throughout and cacophonous when the need arises, as in the big, big bridges of ‘Highview’ and ‘3:08’. Angus Barrs’ punchy bass drives things along, while vocalist Frank Lacatena shines consistently, and Ed Swain’s drumming keeps things far from redundant (most notably in the aforementioned standout ‘3:08’). These four tunes fit nicely together as a recorded listen, similar enough for a cohesive feel, yet disparate enough to keep you interested. Audio Lab’s production is, as usual, intuitive and representative, capturing the band’s personality and enhancing its strong points, which here include just about everything. Get you hands on it, and take notes.
Closure's "Save Your Day" is just a devastating piece of listening along the lines of Knapsack and Samiam, as the band spits out a catchy beat and snappy riffs with arena rock results. This track is one of those 'emo guilty pleasures' that still sticks in your head three days after you've heard it.
