Artist History
HJ21 Were formed at the beginning of 1996 from the ashes of a group called "HURRICANE JANE" (Who played the ASTORIA and MARQUEE frequently during the nineties). Matthew Fielder, Pete Hammer, Mike Hammer, and Brian Noer, came together to record an album entitled "ROCK IS JUST A FOUR LETTER WORD" at Crescent Studios in Camden Town. The album was completed but in truth was a bit of disjointed affair as the band worked out it's own parameters under political and financial stress against the clock! (Translation: The production of this album was out of the bands’ hands, and directly in the hands of the money providers. This did result in an album where quantized drums, bass, and guitar, sat snugly next to pretty female background vocals. Its just a shame that no one in the band had an ass as sweet as Britney’s or the money people could have exploited that angle instead of butchering the music…)
But this did not deter the band from their dreams of making great rocking music! So after the dodgy first recording experience, HJ21 decided to get some live gig experience under their belts. Under the name "THE RESERVOIR BLUES BAND" they toured and played up down the country, trashing as many covers as they could fit into a two-hour set. As a result they gained many residencies and regular engagements in London clubs.... And the regular touring took them to faraway lands such as the CZECH REPUBLIC, FRANCE and DENMARK.
After three years or so of paying their dues on the live circuit, the desire returned to have another crack at the original material and as a tight four piece unit it quickly become apparent that the band had a unique and powerful sound incorporating the various styles and tastes of it's own four members. These influences include punk, Indie, hard rock, progressive rock, bonehead rock, Glam rock, Dixieland jazz, spoken word comedy, skiffle, pop, and west coast swank (DON'T ASK).
In 1999 to coincide with the turn of the century, the name "HJ21" was coined to incorporate and represent the acceptance of the bands past and growing confidence for the future! I.e. "HURRICANE JANE IN THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY!!" (METAL FOR THE MILLENIUM PERHAPS?)
HJ21’s next stint in the studio resulted in, "ITS ALL ABOUT FINESSE". ‘Finesse’ was a live in the studio album (12 original songs recorded in 24 hours) showing the band’s abilities and strengths under pressure, and all under the watchful eyes and ears of guitar legend BERNIE TORMẼ (ex guitarist for Gillan, Ozzy Osbourne, Atomic Rooster, Electric Gypsies)!
A rave review in Kerrang Magazine for ‘Finesse’ said that, “The influence of many a hard rocking ‘70s and ‘80s legend lurks beneath the surface…” but the reviewer wondered what the band would be capable of given ‘a touch longer in the studio’. This comment led Matthew and Brian to spend six months at Brian’s Valhalla Studios working on two tracks for the EP, “A Touch Longer”. The EP contains the two tracks, “Rock is more than a four letter word” and “One last shot”. Later versions of the EP also include a remixed version of “City at night” from the ‘Finesse’ sessions.
Since it was recorded the band have attracted a lot of interest and are looking for bigger and better avenues to show off their talents they have a live act second to none and the solution is simple catch them...
BEFORE THEY COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY....
