Artist History
Michael Talin has been writing classical music seriously for many years. He is prolific, having written numerous Orchestral Suites, Symphonic Poems, Concertos, Symphonies, Chamber music as well as Progressive Rock songs. Born and raised on Long Island Michael is mostly self taught with minimal formal training. To him this has had its advantages and disadvantages. While being self taught has allowed him to stay out of the mainstream and develop his own style, it has also left him feeling disconnected with the classical community. Performing his own compositions using a midi "Virtual Orchestra" has been a way for Michael to reach out to the classical listening community and let a few of his compositions be heard. Contemporary classical music, because of its complexity, requires repeated listening to understand it fully. Audiences can become complacent, wanting to here what is familar to them, not giving the unfamilar a chance, and in the process shutting out most contemporary music. But, Michael feels, composers also have a responsibility to write for the audience, so that people feel connected to what they are listening to. He does that with his music, in his own individual musical voice. |

Press Reviews
"Long Island-based writer uses World percussion and MIDI keyboards to create what he calls structured modernism. The music uses the experimental harmonies of modernism, without relinquishing traditional harmony and rhythm." Jesse T.(Listen.Com). And this is what some MP3 listeners are saying... "Just listened to the five Diatribes. All I can say right now is, this is better music than anything by Gunther Schuller".... "Great stuff you've got there! Do you have any plans to upload anything new?"... "Hi. Happened upon your music on MP3.com. Where could I purchase your CDs? Keep up the great work!"... "I listened again to your music and I must say I liked it a lot. So to say, you have the composers soul." Referring to the piece "Canyon"... "This work speaks very poignantly of both the grandeur and the melancholy of the canyons in the American Southwest, or at least of the one I've been to, the Grand Canyon." And about the "Symphony No.1, 3rd Movement"... "If this doesn't get your toes tapping, check your pulse!" And about the "Symphony No.6, 4th Movement"... "The beginning of this symphonic movement shows the influence of rock 'n roll in swirls of dynamic energy that can set toes a-tapping. But in the middle, the mood turns pensive. It's real melancholy, it traverses through moods quite powerfully" ... "I have a Bachelor of Music in Theory & Composition from the University of Toronto and I'm impressed." ... "I just happened upon your site at mp3.com, and would like to say how much I enjoyed the Diatribes series of pieces. I may soon be starting an mp3.com station showcasing modern chamber works, and the Diatribes are slated for the first playlist. Thanks for the great music."
