Artist History
Sean P. Murphy was born in rural Mississippi, but grew up in the greater Memphis area from the time he was two years old. Beginning in 7th grade, he played tuba with his middle school band. Continuing into high school, he first heard the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with original sousaphone player Kirk Joseph. This music had a profound effect helping him along the road to becoming a professional musician. Upon entering college at the University of Memphis, Sean began a six year study that eventually led to a degree in Music History with an emphasis on African and African American Music. Today, he is heavily involved in the music scene of Memphis, but most recently he has been introduced into the modern dance scene of Memphis. Through a collaborative effort of the Metal Velvet Dance Project and Delta Grass (founded by Beau Crouch and JD Westmoreland), a new direction was introduced. Now, Sean is heavily involved in the modern dance scene of Memphis. Performing, collaborating, accompanying, creating new compositions specifically for dance; Sean has found a way to express his need to cross artistic boundaries. Sean is currently finishing up work on his first solo album, ...swaying gently in the breeze... He is also leaving in mid-April to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. Some 2700+ miles from Mexico to Canada via California, Oregon, and Washington. |
