Artist History
Formed in 1999 and tuned/tweaked in the past months, the Delta Funk Convention is a band that is to be long lived, and widely celebrated. Originating in Jonesboro, AR. from an idea put into motion by a couple friends with the aspirations to do something they love for a living. To put it shortly, the Delta Funk Convention has come a long way in a short time.
With influences ranging from the Grateful Dead and Allman Brother’s to bands such as Nine Inch Nails and Cypress Hill. “Our influences speak a great range of what you can expect from a DFC show” says frontman Oz Cullum, “Not to say that this is the music you’ll hear, but those CD’s are circulated from time to time in my cd player. We like to think of ourselves as a positive influence on music.”
In the last year the band has gone from local to regional to full blown traveling band all in one big leap. Covering Colorado to Georgia, the band has put in many hours and paid a many dues like so many others before them. The DFC consider it a chosen path, and believe that respect is earned not given from those listeners they are really looking to reach. “It’s a big thing we’re trying to do, but it’s in the footstep’s that we’ll seal in whether or not we’re appreciated. There’s a group of listeners out there that can see what we’re doing and just where we are going with this music.” Says newest member and guitarist Barry Fowler, “We’re best when we improv, and we’re put on the spot, and that’s what a lot of our listeners come to see. Who wants to hear the same song over and over, and for the better of the band, who wants to play the same song over and over again? Other musicians in the same type of music will tell you it’s not an easy road, but it is one worth traveling. We are starting to see changes and to get some feedback and its great, both the positive with the negative.”
Delta Funk Convention is a conception of improvisational rock incorporating southern rock, blues, funk, jazz, and as much soul as can be squeezed in the room any given night. “We’re from the south, we bring the funk/soul, and the idea that the band is an ever growing project sort of sums up the DFC” says singer Oz Cullum, “pretty cut and dry.”
The number of songs the DFC have created/performed in such a short existence is incredible. The number of songs they have yet to bestow is evident and impossible to put a number on, but the ever growing future of the DFC is clearly obviously a road to prominence. |
