Artist History
"Wonderful Educated Bear" is the first full length from Athens, GA based post-everything trio, Heros Severum. The album (produced by J. Robbins) is a mix of brash guitars, booming low-end percussion, and melodic intertwining vocals. The sound created is unlike that of any other band, and has more in common with early eighties no wave bands such as Mission of Burma, rather than today’s modern forms of rock and punk.
The music is angular and decisive, focusing more on arrangement, rather than individual parts. The individual parts themselves are there simply to serve the greater whole, a method of songwriting which is lost on most of today’s popular post-punk/ punk/ and emo bands. Added to this is the fact that they do not have a traditional bass player, opting instead to coax the low end out of their six string instruments and keyboards.
Each song is unique in topic. The subject matter draws from many inspirations. Whether expressing a simple observation, a pledge to live one’s life by, or a desire for a better life, the lyrics are always positive. There is also a deep need to do something more, to point out the problems we face in the modern world with an eye toward making things better. This is accomplished while remaining apolitical and free of spite.
Live the band is explosive and engaging, a flurry of motion without pause. Never speaking while maintaining the delicate balance of live energy and precise mechanics. The music itself never stops. The band plays live to a soundtrack of vinyl records ranging from old southern gospel, to free jazz - from Swedish folk songs to Jimmy Durante. Music within the music, the soundtrack to the live experience.
Heros Severum has appeared live with such bands as The Hives, (International) Noise Conspiracy, Burning Airlines, Small Brown Bike, Milemarker, and members of the art rock outfit Trans-Am. In February 2003 they are slated to open for Boston art-punk luminaries Mission Of Burma during their only stop in Atlanta.
