Press Reviews
Melodic, accomplished and thoughtful 5-piece band Cold By Winter have released their much anticipated 4
song EP recorded and produced by Ivan Beets of Wash. The band flirt with an interesting mix of emo,
post-punk and the new hardcore style arisen by bands such as Jawbreaker and At the Drive-In. A constant
trait of the band's sound is the ability to write catchy, fast and emotionally aggressive songs, with
sensitivity. 'Tidal' the fourth song, shows the band's mellower and more sombre side, with lush violins and
thought provoking poetry - while the other 3 songs are performed with a sense of excitement, urgency and
angst. Vocal applications range from heartfelt melodies and harmonies, mirrored by harsh screams. Playing
regular shows in Auckland's thriving underground scene, Cold By Winter's identity won't lie dormant for much
longer. 10/10 check it out, tell all your friends! ---------------------------
The debut release by Auckland band Cold By Winter (who have recently swelled their ranks to include no less than THREE guitarists), this self-titled EP features four songs, showing the range of this new act. Professionally packaged and well-recorded, the CD acts as a good sampler of the band's sound.
Opener "Morals" features a nice interplay between lead and rhythm guitars to create a strong wall of sound, the loud/quiet alternating song parts adding an epic quality, but some below-par hoarse shouting backing vocals undercut the otherwise polished effect of the song. "Garden" is along similar lines, an efficiently-produced melodic hardcore song with some nice textures but the real stand-out song on display is "So Far", a more mainstream-sounding song with an urgent palm-muted verse and a memorable chorus with excellent background vocals (no cookie monster growls on this one!). The track also shows a diverse range of guitar lines, with a carefully thought out interplay between the various parts. The closing song is the ballad, "Tidal". It is not often you hear strings on a genre release, but they fit the ebb and swell of the track perfectly. Whilst there is again a lack of any memorable hook, the song structure, particularly the variety of parts being played, is exemplary.
At a total running time of around 12 minutes, the EP is over very quickly, but manages to whet the aural appetite for more from Cold By Winter. Definitely a band to watch, and I'm sure better things are still to come from Cold By Winter. |
