Artist History
___
Not unlike many other formations of teenage bands, A Hard Luck Story came to be over a summer's worth of intended practices, and threatened genre clashing.
___
It was unclear who would be recruited to fill in the vacancies in the Macon shed, but the recent disbandment of local favorites (or at least tolerates) Spring-gun and the Upper Class Twits led the sniveling skinhead Cole Cawthron to offer the cynical Kelly Kish (after a recent and once in a lifetime performance with Ghostwalker) a mix-tape of some classic country songs. The offer was accepted but never fulfilled and soon forgotten.
___
Meanwhile in Jacksonville, AR -- Donovan Romine, the team mom of a motley bunch of hooligans called the "Wall Kids" was pushed by the numb sting of boredom (and the stars of future fame in his eyes) to invite Kelly out to the shed for practice. This hadn't worked out well earlier in the summer, but a recent impromptu jam session with the boys of ex-ITE in a second floor bedroom in an unwitting LR's own Alison Borland's house at once brought promise and laid the seeds of future germinations of musical on-goings. Cole, as it would turn out, happened to be at the party, contributing muffled vocals and a chorus of "woo's."
___
Practice commenced in late September of '03, as the three piece played anthemic, country, and street punk influenced rock and roll in the shed outside of Donovan's abode. Roughly ten songs into their existence, it was decided that a bassist was needed -- not now, but right now. Fuzzy memories and confused looks floated around the frosty practice space for weeks until it hit all three at once! The forth member was present at that fateful party as well... fellow J'villian, Chris Thomas, though a novice on bass, was determined to have his heart strung up in the right place, and was thus, thence, and thither force acceptable as the final member of the foursome. His enlistment promised to round out the low decibel reverberations and his constant frown managed to offset the never-ending giggling emitted from Donovan and Cole's collective corner.
___
Their first show, as anyone who knows these fellows could expect, turned out to be a spontaneous spot at the end of a Park St. show. Though most of the show’s populace either left, fell asleep, or passed out, the boys from a Hard Luck Story cut their teeth and fired their metaphorical starting guns (old timey revolvers and cock-action rifles) in the air, announcing their arrival on the scene. Make way ladies and gents, it’s a Hard Luck Story on the long hard road to your town. |
