Press Reviews
"Toronto paramedic Roberta Scott heard the names and their stories on a 9/11 anniversary trip to New York City. She found her NYC brethren in a Manhattan bar, Mr. Biggs.
HANDLING DEMONS
Gawd, some of the stories ...
Like the paramedic who ran as the first tower fell, leaving five patients still strapped to their backboards. What else could he do? But afterward, he disappeared for a couple of months. To deal with the demons.
"George had a poster, showing everyone killed," says Scott, 40. "In Canada, we'd never really heard what happened to paramedics on 9/11." She decided to change that.
She tells me this in an old warehouse on Carlaw Ave. near Dundas. It has been converted into rehearsal studios. Alt-rock band Odd Man Out is banging away nearby:
Paramedics Geordie Smyth, 26, (lead), Mike Pootmans, 43, (drums), and Billy Young, 27, (bass), with students Jamie Whitton, 28, on guitar and Larra Baker, 19, singing backup.
They are not your average office band. They do their own songs and have played clubs around town.
Odd Man Out and DJ Ambulance Dave are the stars of Roberta Scott's benefit for 9/11 paramedics. It goes Friday, from 9 p.m., at the Reverb, 651 Queen St. W. at Bathurst. The $5 cover will go straight to families of the eight dead."
