***With tons of rock bands on the national scene that are completely inept at rocking, leave it to a bunch of guys from Hattiesburg to pull it off correctly.
Malice's new album, "Perfect Day", could be transported back in time and released in '89 or '90 and no one would know the difference. This is not, I repeat not, a bad thing.
Think of Guns 'n' Roses in the "Appetite for Destruction" era or Metallica pre-black album. This is pure, fast hard rock that dosen't get bloated or fall into self-parody.
"Perfect Day" was made with excellent production that really lets listeners hear the band's powerful guitar riffs soar up, dart around, flit about, do a barrel roll and then turn your stomach inside out all over again. The singer's vocals are reminiscent of the late Layne Stahley of Alice in Chains without being an outright imitation.
A couple of the songs such as "Gypsy Dame" lean toward the ballad end of the spectrum, but I personally prefer when Malice is dealing out pure brute force. This material just contains an outright honesty that is rare on releases from any group of any genre.
I can't wait to spin this disc at about 1 a.m. at the next party I attend. The dunderhead hipsters will go nuts trying to figure out who it is since they only listen to stuff like this ironically. Heh, little do they know this massive musical beef stew is happening right now and in their own backyard.
These are the songs for the rural youth who have nothing to do on weekends except drive around real fast and break things. You know, those long nights spent cruising the dirt roads looking for something, anything. As I grew up in Zero community nine miles outside of Meridian in Lauderdale County, I can relate to that.
