There's Gonna be A HANGIN' tonight, 'cuz THE VIGILANTE COWBOYS are in town… One of my favorite live bands of late, and my own personal /pop/punk contenders to the Twang Genre, the Maplewood-based Vigilante Cowboys combine a modern rock feel with an organic guitar-fueled grittiness meshed with pop and cowpunk that evokes the occasional profound moments in seasoned vocal harmonies and a rough ensemble sweetness; Vigilante cowboys are..Mark Donohue, guitars/co lead vocals, Denis Marcinski, drums/keyboards, Bill Merkl, bass, Pete Quilla, guitars and Julie Jirout, co-lead vocals/keyboards, and their musical influences run a gamut from Paul Westerberg, Big Star, Alex Chilton and X to Johnny Cash, Johnny Thunders, Sex Pistols, The Stones and The Ramones.. TrashCat Buddha is the band's 2nd release, and it starts with the bassfuzz mainriff of 'Crampin', as twangy guitars tell the tale in Lux/Ivy inflections alongside Mark's mutterfunkin' vocals that seem to fit this band right at home in a "Cramps-Vamp" style, then change course w/the Axl-tinged 'Get me out of Here's' crunching central hook with a hardpop theme that belies any doubts about this band's darker side. On to the bluesy, balladic lookback-on-love dirge '217 Mayhew', as Quilla's slashing guitars hone the message home while you ask the question, Is this the VC's personal 'Heartbreak Hotel' as band theme? But before you can ponder that, it's a lighthearted romp about the original stargazer 'Copernicus', with mystical lyrics like "Seduced by Chocolate Mystery ' that baffle and intrigue you at the same time. Another about-face with the Iggyish vocal twang and near-majestic mid-song waterfall of guitar runs of 'Rx Spree"; The disc ends up with my fave cut, the vividly fitting, trademark imagery {"Lying in December's Trees.."] and delightful vocals of "Black Acura", which sums up this disc as a shining little project w/practically no throwaway material. Suddenly the perfect garage band, tracks like the gently glistening “Bride” and the Go Go-ish “Crampin,” and drastically improved versions of “217 Mayhew” and “Black Acura” are reason enough to seek out this five- piece’s next gig.
