Artist History
1998's FIELD-COMMISSIONED LOOPS brought about the debut of the agnostica project, although much dabbling had occurred as far back as 1995. FCL is a work composed of many layers: the top four (to continue the layer metaphor) consist of aggressive (sometimes harsh) synth programming, the next layer down is made up of drum programming characteristic of Grant's early agpro work. Through all those layers one can find a consistent theme, a postmodern perceptive barrier separating the texture of the pieces from the underlying melody. This can best be explained with another metaphor: these are war songs for a world where war is commonplace - harsh, feral, and sometimes contradictory, yet always listenable. For instance, in "Tripped," a collaboration with guitarist David Dutton, the synth programming is so distorted and processed that one can find beauty, and the guitar adds a level of aesthetic pleasure that carries throughout the rest of the album, coming to a climax in songs like "unksn" and the exploratory "technological kingdoms," and resolving with the piece "a new idea." Immediately following the finalization of FCL, Grant began work with guitarist CJ Starks and bassist Steve Brown a concept album called Sonnet Drive. This work has undergone many incarnations and has since come to feature the talents of drummer Adam Boyd and bassist Pierce Simpson. Sonnet Drive is scheduled for a Holiday 2001 release (but then again, it was scheduled for a Summer 1999 release, so don't cross anything that will force you to lose circulation). In 2000, Grant started work on The Shattered Versions, a collection of remixes of FCL material by Alexandre Borgia, Muse of Fire, and the agnostica project (due for a Spring 2001 release!). Currently the agnostica project is working diligently on both SD and TSV, and expects to take a nice long break after they're out! |
