Press Reviews
Yesterday I was in Wal-Mart (a venture I try to avoid like the plague), looking for a small necessary object. As I was searching, I was unfortunate enough to be bombarded by a wall of TV's playing in unison the same music video. I was there long enough to hear three songs. Three songs with the same tired, talentless, life-numbing sound. It was depressing.
So, you can imagine my delight when I discovered Chris Vibberts Affair later that night at the Balazo Gallery. The room was so packed that I couldn't see at first; I just sat back content to be riding this musical magic carpet through crimson skies and spiraling galaxies. Finally I pushed my way in and found a three-piece band with the sound of ten. It seems that the mastermind behind the sound, Chris Vibberts, likes the challenge of playing four instruments at once. And he handles the challenge with a nonchalance and charm that makes you think he should juggle too.
Chris Vibberts Affair is like standing on the moon and peering into the darkness, psychedelia with a straight-edge. There is a paradox in the beauty of the songs- a vast rich universe of complex sounds that so simply gains your understanding- and you still don't know what it means.
So as I watched this fascinating performance, I didn't question why Mr. Vibberts was wearing a headlamp on his head-it just seemed so perfect and right. He was beaming a light on his audience to let us shine, too. And, of course, to see what he had captured.
