Artist History
Jeff Pike, Scott Nickerson and Koney Ferrell, three of the most talented and entertaining musicians around, have taken America and the Caribbean by storm for the past several years. Jeff and Scott met back in 1989 when Jeff was performing solo as a one man Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show around their hometown of Atlanta, Ga. They quickly formed a close friendship through their mutual appreciation of Jimmy Buffett's music. Both had professional backgrounds in music and performance, and it was evident early on that they both knew most of Jimmy's songs. This led to the formation of The ORIGINAL Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show, A1A. They were the FIRST band ever to put on a high-energy, four-hour show comprised of nothing but Buffett's best songs, spanning every era of his career. And the energy and musical integrity of the band jumped even higher in 2002 with the edition of multi-instrumentalist Koney Ferrell. Jeff and Koney have played off and on together for over 20 years and Koney has been sitting in with A1A almost from the start. So when it came time to add a third member Koney was the logical choice.
A1A is now comprised of Jeff Pike (lead vocals, guitars and sequences) Scott Nickerson (drums, percussion, harmonicas, and vocals) and Koney Ferrell (mandolin, lap steel, bass guitar and vocals)
A1A won a national "Buffett Sound Alike Contest" sponsored by Jimmy's label, Margaritaville Records, in 1992. In 1995, Jeff won a "Best Guitarist" contest and played onstage with Jimmy during the Domino College show in Atlanta. Years of hard work and fun finally led to A1A's friendship with some of the musicians in Buffett's band, and many topnotch opportunities all over the country.
A1A has played many respected venues across the country, including the Margaritaville Cafes in Key West and New Orleans; Sloppy Joe's in Miami, Orlando and Key West; Foxy's on Jost van Dyke; Carlos 'n' Charlie's in Cozumel; plus a long resume of concerts, corporate, festival and pro sporting events, including the now-legendary Annual Parrot Head Conventions in New Orleans and Key West, and a variety of cruises and corporate shows in the Caribbean!
Over the years, A1A has been joined onstage by several members of Jimmy Buffett's own Coral Reefer Band: harmonica master, Greg "Fingers" Taylor; saxophonist & horn section leader, Amy Lee; guitarist, Peter Mayer; Music Director and keyboardist, Michael Utley; and steel drum virtuoso, Robert Greenidge. Fingers and Amy Lee have both lent their talents to A1A's first two live CD's! Michael and Robert performed with A1A in front of the throngs of "parrot heads" at their annual convention in Key West in 1998. Peter made a surprise visit between Buffett shows in Atlanta and jumped onstage with the guys on July 4th, 1997. Jimmy's bandmates and business associates regularly recommend A1A to clients looking for the next best act to Jimmy himself. What better references could you ask for?
A1A's first CD, "A1A Live" is a powerhouse album packed with 17 of Buffett's best songs, including a guest appearance by Fingers Taylor on the ballad, "Steamer," and two of his own songs, "Drop Down Mama" and "The Hammer." "A1A Live" was produced by Jim Mayer, Jimmy Buffett's own bass player and studio genius! The second CD, "A1A & Friends Live at Hemingways" is a more "unplugged" companion to the first album, and has various local musician friends sitting in, including Coral Reefer Band sax player and horn section leader, Amy Lee.
Needless to say, A1A has developed quite a loyal following! The energy these guys exhibit on stage always inspires crowd participation and a good-time atmosphere like no other duo you have ever seen. Jeff, Scott and Koney give a total performance and invite the audience to share in the fun they're having on stage! Although A1A is well-known across the country as The Original Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show, they are well-versed in many styles of music and can spice up any show with originals and covers that you would not expect to hear from most bands! Basically, A1A can tailor any show to almost any style of music including reggae, beach music, oldies, classic rock, blues, acoustic ballads, country and even show tunes.
A1A has evolved into a more versatile unit than ever before and can accommodate clients who want more! Depending on a client's needs and budget, A1A can perform as a solo, duo, 3-piece, 4-piece or occasionally as a 5 piece unit. Several "guest" artists enjoy being part of the band and can usually be added for special engagements, Chaz McDonald on lead guitar; Dave Lapio on steel drums, percussion & keyboards; and Fingers Taylor, A1A's honorary "fourth member," on harmonica and vocals. Let us know what lineup is best for your event!
