Artist History
Despite line up changes and untimely relocations, 4 piece California band Bel and the Dragon has challenged the test of time much like the book in which the name originated from.
Bel and the Dragon is currently building momentum and further establishing a fan base by making appearances up and down the west coast. Bel recently finished on their first official EP release, which will be followed by constant tour in support of the record. In the 2003 new year Bel will begin recording their first Full-Length album for their new label home, 3fm records. In the meantime the band continues to build on to their already growing fan base.
Bel's music has been compared by fans to early rock bands like The Cure and David Bowie with a modern mix of influences from the likes of like Death Cab for Cutie and Jets to Brazil. The combinations of these groups form a catchy, melodic driving rock sound that is uniquely Bel and the Dragon. Fans of the band have described the music as "having an 80s feel with a modern rock sound." Guitarist Shawn Covert says, "Creating lots of melody just comes naturally.”
The band takes its name from a story in the Apocrypha (the darker, lesser known stories of the Bible). After being together for just over two years, the New Year has brought a downpour of new songs and a first ever line-up change. Founding members: Ian Johnson, Shawn Covert and Mike Walker were looking for ways to add to the shape and dynamic of Bel. Shawn removed himself from his position as Bass player to guitar which made room for long time friend Grayson Soenke to come in on the bass, the transition brought added a whole new dimension to the bands sound and live show.
Despite their easy going, kid next-door demeanor Bel and the Dragon is extremely serious about their work, spending a lot of time writing songs and producing music for their upcoming 3fm release. "We won’t settle for anything that will disappoint us later" Says Drummer and Vocalist Mike Walker, "We want to make people feel the same way we feel when we see an awesome band."
