Artist History
Kyle Rhodes was born in southeast Texas, where he began playing in bands and writing songs at the age of fifteen. By the age of twenty, Kyle had already turned heads at EMI and Sony Music. Although the opportunities were short-lived, Kyle had earned professional credibility as a songwriter. One producer compared his lyrics to poetry, saying, “…they belong in a book, not a song”. Humbled and enlightened by the music industry, Kyle spent two years traveling the US, Mexico, Central America, and Canada. Searching for a place to call home, and inspired by his experiences, he landed in Austin, TX in the early nineties. Austin was hip, and legendary for its music scene. Kyle began busking, and quickly distinguished himself as an artist. With the strength of his songs and the honesty of his performance, gigs began to materialize, and Kyle maintained as many as four weekly residencies. He quickly earned a respectable following, developing his presence as a performer, and never digressing from his all-original repertoire. With the release of ‘This Tiresome Fate’ in 1998, Kyle began touring nationally, billed with popular regional acts: Reckless Kelly, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Slobberbone, Dan Baird, and Webb Wilder. The album sold respectably, in the thousands. A year later, Kyle formed Crashed with friend and drummer Reid Dickson. Crashed rocked, and epitomized their ill-willed, alcohol-drenched culture. With the addition of Dickson’s former bandmate Charles Martin (Dexter Freebish) on guitar to give the group some luster, the band went into the studio in the winter of 2000. Although the recording fell short of an LP, it was well received, and merited spins on Austin’s largest rock station KLBJ. Content with his accomplishments, and a little spent, Kyle moved to Boston in late 2002. He is currently working on a new acoustic album, as well as the completion of the unfinished Crashed record ‘Waking Up With Jezebel’, both slated for a winter release.
