Artist History the beta release was formed in the summer of 2002. kyle, having recently moved from arizona to hawaii, sought to form an experimental music band. kyle and stanley met at a bar called king's crab that hosted underground punk, metal, and alternative bands. they had a practice together and liked what they heard. rajiv, hoping to satisfy a whim to play live rock, responded to an advertisement that kyle had put in the honolulu weekly. with a bass evening out the bottom end, the trio was ready to play. for their first gig opening for linus at cafe ground level in downtown honolulu the trio adopted the name "the beta release," mainly because it was far better than the suggested "kyle and the rippers." since they couldn't think of anything better, the name stuck.
