Review - Raucous UK -
This Australian band play Psychobilly with a lot of originality. They have the powerful guitar & pounding rhythms that you expect from a Psychobilly band, but also feature great vocals and a certain uniqueness in their delivery. Lots of self-penned songs and a rockin’ cover of The Clash! Great stuff!
REVIEW- Cruzin' Hotrod Mag -
Voodoo Monkeys brew up a high octane mix of punk and psychobilly with a great raw, young energy. Its bands like Voodoo Monkeys who don't mind mixing it up (and cranking it up) to keep the scene fuelled. 'Stomp' was recorded in Sydney and picked up by UK label Nervous Records and features 12 (mostly original) tracks, with a good take on the Cramps 'Cornfed Dames', and the Clash's 'Police on My Back'.
REVIEW - Ross Clelland, Drum Media -
"The front cover warning of 'Play Loud!' should give you some idea of where they're coming from. Its big and wobbly bottomed ( as in bassline , you nasty people ) something ending in '-billy' of the sort that has the old Chevs pulling up at whatever pub they are playing at. So naturally you have titles like 'Outlaw Life' (and it Stray Cat rocks, cats) and Rebel of Song, and an interesting sideline is a version of a Clash tune for a Uk tribute album, which aint one of their rockabilly stylings, but the dubby Police On My Back given a ducktailed makeover. Pretty neat overall."
Review - Chuckles, What's the Crudd Fanzine. -
"Cleaner than their first release, "Battle of Manly" still captures the Voodoo Monkeys punk rock punch of their live show. The cover of Eddie Grant's 'Police on my back' is an interesting addition to this brilliant disc. Hellcat records in L.A. should check these guys out. A fantastic combination of Carl Perkins and the Dead Kennedys. Early Stray Cats meets Fear."
Review - Mark Fraser, Rush TV -
"Voodoo Monkeys Do It Surfside with "Stomp". Living in the Sydney beachside suburb of Manly may well have had some influence on the musical direction of rockabilly surf-swampsters Voodoo Monkeys, but for but also the punk era of The Sex Pistols in the late 70s, had a more long-lasting effect. 'There’s definitely that punk element in our music,' explain the boys 'But we’re not punk. We’re not straight rockabilly either'. The Voodoo Monkey sound is far from grey and gloomy, more a kind of hybrid mixture of upbeat rockabilly, ska, hard rock and that 60’s surf rocker type feel, with plenty of sweaty, punkesque energy in the delivery. The band has scored a bunch of compilation offers, with a couple of German releases, a Japanese compilation out soon and an upcoming Clash tribute album in the UK. Also, they’ve gone on to tour the east coast of Oz, support the likes of Rose Tattoo, X, Celibate Rifles, Fex Perez, Unleaded. Not bad for a band that’s only been together for a couple of years. The disc is a perfect cross section of the Voodoo sound, from the ska tinged opener Outlaw Life, the rumbling "Battle of Manly" and the more than complementary cover of The Clash’s Police On My Back. Rockabilly, sure, but there’s a hell of a lot more to the stomped edge and infectious barrage of Battle Of Manly.
