Artist History ITALIAN AVIATION. Ever heard of ‘em? We didn’t think so. Unless you lived in Italy in the 1970s and listened to obscure but groundbreaking sonic experiments, you probably didn’t catch this. This is where fate comes into the picture. The only known ITALIAN AVIATION vinyl LP (referred to around the record company offices by the year of release, 1975) was brought to us by Matt Hart and Darren Callahan. These two have a good percentage of their own catalog on Starfish. They’ve been affiliated with such acts as SQUIRTGUN, CLIFFORD NEVERNEW, TRAVEL, and TEENAGE BLACKOUT. Electronica, punk, pop, instrumental, vocal, jazz – they’ve done a great range of sounds. They have a knack for finding forgotten treasures and letting it color their own music. ITALIAN AVIATION is just one of those finds. All we know is that this record exists. We don’t know why, we don’t know by what means. The label that originally released it has long since disappeared. Attempts to locate anyone mentioned on the minimalist record sleeve have all failed. We don’t even have the master tapes, instead trusting Hart & Callahan to spend hours on reconstruction from the scratchy wax. What we do know, though, is that you just have to hear this record. It hasn’t left our office stereo in months. We would be idiots not to put this out there for the world, if only for posterity. Such treasures shouldn’t go unnoticed.
