Artist History
Even in Melbourne's dry live music circuit, with original acts being far more in supply than demand, Nale Asylum has scratched up impressive crowds and made lasting impressions. Nale Asylum has played at some of the city's most reputable venues, such as The Punter's Club, Central Club, ET's and The Tote.
Nale Asylum is a band that has developed over a number of years, dabbled in various styles and played under several names. The result of these character-building exploits is a melodic, modern metal hybrid known as Nale Asylum, with common influences being Devin Townsend, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, FNM, Pantera, Killswitch Engage and System of a Down.
The band started with the same line-up except for original bassist Conall, who left when he found his passion for academia. He had chosen the right career path, as his replacement was fan and friend Sam Lowe whose style gave the band a tighter, groovier sound. For about a year the band impressed audiences under the name of Hemlock, playing in much the samestyle as now but with more of a Guns n' Roses/old- Metallica influence. However, another band popular in the underground had the name. Not wanting to be shunned by the underground metal crowd, the most loyal and devoted fan base in the world, the band thought it best to change the name. As the band developed so did the style of songwriting, and soon the band had its own sound to be proud of. Thus Nale Asylum was born.
Guitarists Patrick and Dave have an endless stream of ideas, flowing from melodic lines and ass-kicking riffery, given an extra push to the edge by drummer Chris and bassist Sam. Amazing lead vocalist Graham puts his power-charged tremors on top to cap off what is Nale Asylum. Their unique versatility is enforced by well-used keyboards and sampling (their own), with an outstanding attention to perfecting the Nale Asylum sound: aggression, diversity, technicality, emotion and dynamic complexity.
In a world where most unsigned bands play what today's artists are doing (i.e. Nickelback, Papa Roach) we should ask ourselves where the stars of the future will come from if the stream of young talent dries out with yesterday's bandwagons.
Nale Asylum's first complete recording, "The Cabin Fever EP", demonstrates various dimensions of a band determined to set straight the sameness of commercial radio with a revolutionary underground metal hysteria. "The Cabin Fever EP" is 28 minutes of crazy yet undisputable metal without a single low point. From the angst-driven 'Well' to the radio-friendly 'Less than days', with the anthemic thrash of 'Peg', the metal ballad 'Frayed', the up-tempo rocker 'A-list', and 'Agony Aunt', six minutes of psychosis in music.
