    Artist description
In the AWESOME five years of the Stingray's existance, this group of seventeen, and eighteen year-olds have taken their amazing talents and have gone and showcased their kick ass Rockin' New SkoOl surf sound in places like The Hard Rock Cafe, (Las Vegas, Nv.), The Key Club and Knitting Factory, (Hollywood, Ca.), and on the 2000 nationwide Vans Warped Tour. The guys are from San Clemente, Ca., and they LIVE to rock their instrumantal surf sound. The three of them surf year round, rain or shine, winter or summer, next to the beautiful San Clemente Pier. You'd figure, three talented young guys playing surf tunes, they must to be surfers!

    Artist History
William Heard, Scott Nelson and Clay Campbell, of THE STINGRAYS, came together in 1997, and since their first live performance at Killer Dana Surf Shop, they have gone on and opened for Joan Jett, Royal Crowne Revue, Eddie Money, Dick Dale, and The Beach Boys! The guys have had the opportunity to play gigs across the nation, from New York at a Roxy fashion show, to Central California at the Ventura Fairgrounds, to Las Vegas where they opened for the Boogie Nights at the Hard Rock Casino/ Cafe. The guys even traveled the infamous Vans Warped tour, traveling across the country, and well into Canada, playing venue after venue, day after day. The guys shared a tour bus with the band Mellincolin, from Sweden, and had plenty of time to hang with the guys from the Long Beach Dub All Stars, Jurassic 5, Volcom's band "The Line," Snapcase, Suicide Machinesand more!!! ...... William first picked up the guitar when he was 10 years old, and has been double picking his strings ever since, (his fast, hard style, typical to instrumental surf music, is deadly to the average guitar string). In November, 1999, The Stingrays were noticed by "string and pick" manufacturer, DEAN MARKLEY. The Stingrays scored a killer endorsement deal with DEAN MARKLEY, and it has really helped William and his ever growing budget on guitar strings. Scott's interest in the bass came soon after he made an early retirement from a sucessful stint at MX racing. Scott had undergone a broken colar bone, a broken leg and two broken arms, not to mention numerous trophies and awards, and believe me his parents were thrilled when he decided on a newer, safer interest. (As of August 2001, Scott's currently sitting with another broken colar bone, in a recent fall on his new YZ-125.) We hope this may convince Scott to not start competitive racing again! Scott's also a website designer WIZ! Soon after graduating high school, Scott started his own website company that he and a friend both operate, called ImadeOnline.com. And then there's Clay... What can we say about HIM, especially since he's not here to defend himself right now? Clay is the only remaining Stingray that's still in high school, and when he's not surfing he's hanging out with his friends. Clay is a self taught drummer who began bangin' his stuff at 12 years old. Recently Clay began working with Dusty Watson, (Drums with Agent Orange, Dick Dale, Slacktone, and Jon & the Knightriders). When these three guys first started they spent endless hours in their own custom soundroom, conveniently located in William's garage. The band worked hard at figuring out songs, while slipping in a few riff's of Sublime and Jimi Hendrix. Soon after the Stingrays released their first cd, Slimstyle Records took a liking to the Stingrays sound, and now in 2002, with the support of Slimstyle, the guys are currently working on cd #2!!!! (set to release SOMETIME in 2002!!!).

That was an unexpected pleasure. Every song is very well done with the essence of that classic reverb-filled surf sound. I can't imagine how these young men will sound once they are further along in development. I wish more teenagers would start picking up guitars and create music like this. Who knows? Another golden age of surf could begin again... -MuzikMan/December 29, 1999" --- AS well, Belgium E-Zine does a big band interview, you can check it by going to: http://surf.to/shakinfever --- Steve Robles at The San Bernardino County Sun Newspaper, released on Saturday, January 22, 2000, a huge front page write up (with a band photo) on the Stingrays playing with the Beach Boys that night --- www.secondcd.com now has a page on the Stingrays where you can read about the band, check out some band photos and buy their cd online --- The San Clemente Journal did a Stingrays feature in their February 2000 issue, an issue dedicated to the Surfing Herritage of San Clemente. Also, Reverb Central's Phil Dirt quotes, "The Stingrays are a much heralded high school aged surf band from San Clemente. This disc displays a talented trio with fresh ideas and respect for the roots. The writing on most tracks is particularly good, perhaps hinting of what a young Dave Wronski's writing might have been like. An excellent first issue. The sound quality is quite varied, with mixes sounding like they were done at different times in different places." But hey, it is our first cd! --- And finally, Surfing Girl Magazine just did a huge write up on the guys that ran in their June/July 2001 issue!
