Artist History
The story of this band is a long and filthy one. It begins in the mid nineties with guitarist - Dan Crozier and drummer -Shane Luhning deciding to make music instead of excuses. Fueled by their love of rock, and hate for reality, they descended into the Sonic Bunker an under-equipped and under-ventilated basement studio. Here, they spent hours recording tapes full of experimental rock fury and mindless soundscapes. These recordings eventually lead to several live shows at their high school where Shane and Dan, along with a rotating cast of musical felons, performed under the name Birch Hills Airport. The reception was warm and sweaty and left the band craving more of the live experience. But as graduation came and went so did several band members, leaving Shane and Dan with no choice but to return to the confines of the Sonic Bunker and regroup. Unfortunately, due to amphetamine shortages, and the resulting loss of ambition, the regrouping process took roughly two years to complete. Not until the year 2000 when the band was propositioned, not unlike a cheap hooker, to play a benefit concert called “Drinking for Babies” did they finally recruit three new members. First was longtime friend and guitarist Ryan Griffiths, who had recently returned from B.C. in an attempt to avoid charges of Indecent-Exposure, next was offensively-tall-teen-idol Neil Kirby on bass, and finally lyrical deviant Jeff Walker took control of the microphone. Under this line-up the band performed their first two shows at the Rugby Club and at the Exchange, under the names Ego-Testicle and Big Filthy Trapper respectively. Even though the shows were well received the band went through some sudden changes. First vocalist Jeff Walker departed, as the temptation of a militant lifestyle became too much to resist and he left the band to become a lieutenant in Ronnie Bushman’s Backwoods Militia. Next, as guitarist Dan Crozier grudgingly took over lead vocals, the band began to weed out the cover songs in their set and return to the all original days of the Sonic Bunker. A solid line-up had finally been found and the name Big Filthy Trapper was decided on. The band then went on to play dozens of live shows, in practically every live venue in Regina, and gain a loyal following. Eventually in late 2002 the band went in to Touchwood Studios and recorded a four song demo disc, which they have been promoting violently ever since, and also made a slight alteration to their name thus becoming The Filthy Trapper.
The Filthy Trapper sound is a constantly evolving and de-evolving beast. The band has never understood the concept of categorizing and confining music so they prefer labels that confuse more than enlighten. So at the moment they describe their sound as “Yeti Rock with an emphasis on Groove and Atmosphere”. This description may make no sense at all, or it may make a little too much sense, not even the band knows.
2003 looks to be a good year for The Filthy Trapper with many summer shows booked around Saskatchewan and beyond, a new EP scheduled to be recorded later in the year, and a recently completed website www.thefilthytrapper.com.
The future looks Filthy my friends, very Filthy!
