Stylus : Looks Like, You Used to Dream, Bathroom Floor
A few months ago I found myself far south of Mecca-mden, slumming it on the other side of London and dropped into an ancient birthing ground for music called the Putney Half Moon. Much of the evening remains a blur to me (I think someone may have spiked my JD with alcohol) but I was struck by something great called Stylus and so when I came across this demo listened to the damn thing sober.
Let’s get something straight; Stylus are not The Charlatans or The Jam, Oasis, the Stones or any of the sons of Stone Roses, but they wouldn’t deny the inspiration. They wouldn’t deny they love to rock or to find a groove, sit in it and then smack you in the nuts with a different one just when you’ve found your stride.
Bouncing, rolling, driving basslines link up with non-stop, pounding, life-enhancing axe-work and lyrical hooks that get into your blood and boil it for hours in a way so many others wish they could.
Stylus make you feel great without all the goo, get you jumping without head-banging, grooving without a Hammond organ, and laughed at by that great looking girl next to you at the lights because you’re singing along far too loudly. It’s fresh, loud, vital pop, comfortingly familiar because it feels, looks and sounds like something oh so British.
It’s not always enough to like a band because they’re good, but Stylus may just have gotten away with it.
