Artist History sophmore Our band is Sophmore. Our music is punk. We play most styles of punk from poppy to hardcore. The sound is half Refused, half MXPX and an additional 10% Rancid thrown in for good measure. We take what we love about punk and music in general and try to create something that is original and unique yet familiar enough to be instantly enjoyable. Lyrically the music strives to be more intelligent than some of our contemporaries which is a reflection of the member’s academic accomplishments. Aggression, reflection and commentary are the main themes of the songs. Our music is intentional, honest and sincere and a direct outgrowth of our love for playing. The music is important to us and this comes out in our energetic live performance. We are a three-piece band from the west GTA axis-of-evil: Georgetown, Brampton and Erin. We formed in the summer of 2002 after the breakup of a short-lived hardcore punk project. Since then we have found our niche playing as a three piece band and playing as loudly as possible creating the sound and energy of a five piece band. The choice of the name Sophmore (spelling intentional) came easily and naturally. We chose it for a few meanings: 1) Entering our 21st year feels like another stage of life, so to use the High School analogy it is our sophomore stage. 2) ‘Soph’ being the Greek root for knowledge which we value. Band members are: Jesse deJager (guitar/lead vocals), Matt Brace (bass/bvocals) and Dave Corbett (drums). We each bring to the band different influences which combine to form the variety of song types you hear. Presently we are playing shows on a weekly basis in support of our new self titled demo EP.
