Artist History
Kim Dean has been singing and performing publicly since the age of 5. She first started her
singing career in the children's choir at her church, the Oakwood College Seventh-Day
Adventist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. There she was a member of the 70-strong
"Cherub" choir and a member of the special solo singers within the choir called the
"Cherubettes". Kim flourished to appreciate her God-given talent and under the direction
of Mr. And Mrs. Marcellous Breach and the Cherub Choir produced their one and only
musical album during that time. Kim later returned to direct the Oakwood College
Children's Choir and maintained it at 90 strong for almost 2 years until she moved to Florida
to work professionally in her field of Management Information Systems in St. Petersburg.
In Growing Years, Kim would develop her inherited talent from her musically inclined
mother, Judyette Dean whose rich, vocalist talent was passed down to her daughter and
from her father, Arnold Dean, a classically trained and gifted concert pianist and organist.
From about the ages of 10 - 18, Kim sang for various religious venues, many times writing
and composing her own songs and then joining up with local keyboard players and bands
to sing for these various engagements. The now well-known Brian McKnight played some of
the musical compositions for Kim on several of these occasions while they were both doing
their educational tour at Oakwood College.
"The Garvin Dean Project", produced by Kim's Brother, Garvin Dean really got Kim wired
about producing her own music. Garvin, a classical-jazz pianist, started many musical
groups through the years of which, Kim, his favorite and only sister always sang lead. Kim
has sung in all genres of music, contemporary, gospel, jazz, blues, rock and country-and all
of this has been compiled and crafted within her to give Kim the unique sound that is
evident in the clear musical strains of her God-given talented voice.
Taking Music One Step Further, Kim went on to start singing backup at different recording
studios which all got started based on the recommendation of, now internationally
recognized Take 6 Singer/Producer, Claude McKnight. Kim was recommended to Sound
Cell Studios in Huntsville, Alabama in 1991 and went on to sing studio backup for various
artists in the Tri-State area. Kim received calls to go live with some of the rock bands she did
backup for, but since she was finishing up her Bachelors Degree at the University of
Alabama in Huntsville and only had one year left, she decide not to interrupt her studies
and declined the opportunities at the time. Kim did however, "sit-in" with various performing
artists that performed in her local area, doing gigs at hotels and different night-clubs. In 1992,
Kim happened to sit-in with a band one day when their lead sax-player, Zedric Teague had an emergency,
and ended up opening for "Pieces of a Dream" the very next night at the club then
named, "Dancing Room Only" in Huntsville, Alabama. This proved to be an enchanting experience
that only solidified Kim's enthusiasm for one day being on the big stage.
Through The Years of composing and compiling her musical artwork and with the support
of family and friends, Kim has finally come to the point of determination of producing
the music that has been a part of her all of these years. Her first release is a compilation
of life's journey on the road of love, hurt, heartbreak and healing.
