The VOYD BIO
Five years ago, Nico Costanzo, Mike Mangan, & Tommie Bevardos, began playing in band called The Kinship which was a southern based blues rock band that played the L.A. club circuit for about three years. The band did fairly well but the three were never really satisfied with the sound being as it had been done so much in the past. In late 2000 The Kinship split up, but Nico, Tommie, and Mike had decided to try something else, go for that new sound. Or new groove that every musician is constantly searching for. So for almost a year the three became nocturnal and hibernated in Nicos recording studio (Cave Records & Productions) writing & writing, going over every detail possible, whlie having two secret weapons. A good old fashioned Hammond B3, and an original vocal tone. HA! Hammond B3 you say????? Whats new about that??? This is not just any B3! The VOYDs B3 can literally consume a Marshall half stack for breakfast! Whole! Powered with multiple effect & distortion pedals, this B3 can get monsterous tones the likes of which the world has never heard. For twenty six year old Mike Mangan, being as he is influenced by not only more great piano and organ players than even he can count, and is also very, very influenced by most of the greatest guitarists of our time, this is no problem at all! Infact, most people think his organ is the guitar on most of the album! Mike is one of the best organ/piano/solo players in L.A. today. Being classical, jazz, & blues trained on the piano since the age of six his shear knowledge of just the scales alone is very impressive. Not to mention his incredible playing ability.
The main concern of Nico Costanzo since he started singing has been an original vocal tone. So many artists these days are so hard to tell apart, same tone, same pitch, and even same vibrato in more cases than most people notice. Nico says, Love me… hate me, Im not a clone, and youll always know its me. Nico has been fronting bands since the age of fifteen, vocal lessons were always a must but none were better than Elizabeth Sabine (the queen of all vocal teachers) with whom Nico studied under for two years. Now at the ripe old age of twenty seven and over twelve years playing in the L.A. Club scene Nico has become quite the seasoned vet of the stage.
Now of course being able to get a different sound is one thing, but to be able to play drums to it is quite another. Enter Tommie Bevardos, a roaring tight drummer with hands & feet of fire, and chops of gold. This guy is just sick! Having played on a drum kit since the age of twelve, along with four years of marching band in high school & seven years playing the L.A. Club circuit, at age twenty four Tommie is always a force to be reckoned with, on any stage he steps foot on.
No rock band would be complete without a guitarist. That would be sacrilege. And the timing of Scott Galloways arrival couldnt have been better written in a movie script! The band had just finished writing over fifty songs and were beginning to audition guitarist to start recording. Theyd been at it about a week or so when in walks Scott straight of the boat from Philadelphia. The VOYD was Scotts first audition in Los Angeles. This twenty two year old has more groove in his pinky than most people have in their entire body! Much attributed to his fifteen years on a guitar and his two year studies at the Tyler School of Music. Scott can lay down some of the nastiest guitar rhythms known to man and has a wealth of different cord phrasings that makes him a much needed entity of The VOYD. Scott got the gig that night and has been with the band for over a year and a half.
Bass players are the hardest things to find no matter what town you’re in. The band had been looking for over a month and had not found anyone who had the chops to lock with Tommie. Until Devin Grace hit the place! He was working as a session player at some of the studios around town and found himself one day in Nico’s studio doing a session for another band. Nico played him a few songs, the next day he was down for an audition and got the gig. After ten years on a bass Devin has developed a groove and pocket unlike most bass players out there. And at Twenty-four he is one of the youngest session bass players in L.A. And rightly so, his technique on a bass is rivaled by few and feared by many. But it is really the tasteful way Devin plays… never too flashy, never too little that makes him one of the best bass players on the L.A. scene today.
All in all, Pound for pound. The VOYD is one of the best unsigned bands on the planet!
And they can actually back that up live! Everyone in this band is a seasoned pro with years of experience under their belts. The VOYD has a sound like none else. All members in the band have a great look. And of course, most importantly the songs have something for everyone. Ranging from heavy grooves to feely ballads and everything in between. Very rarely does a band come along with this much honed talent, innovation, dedication and drive. And all involved in the band consider The VOYD to be a once in a lifetime act.
Bottom line, The checks in the mail, the dues are paid, get them on the bus and
make some money!
