Artist History
Paul Christianson may only be 20-years old, but he writes with an intellectual conviction that shadows his youthful career. On his debut EP, “Spilling My Weakness,” Christianson exhibits a songwriting style that demonstrates his talent for thoughtful prose and rhythmic acoustics. Christianson has a skill for writing universal themes in a novel and thought-provoking light. “I really can’t claim any life-altering sob story as the motivation for my material,” claims Christianson. “The only factor that differentiates me from any other 20-year-old is that I happen to write music about the situations that build my life. I want to create a personal relationship with my audience and the best way to develop that rapport is to discuss the factors and feelings that affect our lives.”
Inspired by troubadours such as James Taylor, David Wilcox, and Howie Day, Christianson wrestles with the world in his personalized and sincere manner. The title track of the EP, “Spilling My Weakness,” is a time capsule of reflection set in the thirty minutes that follow a break-up while “What I’ve Already Found” is a graceful declaration of contentment that brightens the soberest of moods.
Recorded independently in the summer of 2002 at Integral Studios in St. Paul, MN with producer Anton Kreisl and engineer Ev (Happy Apple, Soul Asylum, 12rods), Christianson says the most difficult challenge of making “Spilling My Weakness” was deciding how best to allocate the limited funds he had available for the self-release. “I didn’t have the time or resources to record all the songs I had slated, so we just recorded seven songs over ten days with the intention of returning at a later date to complete an LP,” says Christianson.
Christianson’s schedule remains full during 2002, as he continues to attend classes on a full-time basis at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. “Education has always been an important facet in my life and I feel that continuing my education expands the foundation from which I can draw,” remarks Christianson, who incidentally was the valedictorian of his graduating high school class (Marshall High, Marshall, MN).
The art of music was engrained in Christianson at an early age. Both his parents were active in music their entire lives and Christianson’s mother still doubles as an instructor of advanced music theory and vocal performance. At the age of six, Christianson was singing solos in church and by the age of 15 he was performing solo acoustic shows for local events.
After experimenting with several regional bands between 2001-2002, Christianson auditioned and recruited some of the freshest talent from New York, Boston, and San Francisco to complete a showcase-worthy ensemble. His four-piece band is now composed of very gifted, well-educated musicians with degrees from Berklee College of Music, San Francisco School of Performing Arts, and St. Olaf College.
