    Artist History
Diviner began in 1998 as an examination of the unconscious linguistic potential of improvised music. Inspired by the likes of Coil and Nurse With Wound, long time collaborators Joe Morgan and Paul Smith pursued a shared interest in exploring the psychological motivations behind the arts. By the end of the year, they had added video artist Mike Oder to the group to expand their "vocabulary". The group began a series of one-time-only performances with the intention of creating an ephemeral, non-repeatable experience. Unfortunately, the strain of constant performance conception became time-consuming and unwieldy to continue and the approach was abandoned in favor of repeatable performance material. In mid 1999 the three set to work on an album in a makeshift studio in Smith's living room, but the recording was beset by frequent interruptions and the eventual parting of Smith himself to pursue more performance based work with the group Sikhara. Recording was relocated and the album, now titled fourteen doors, was finished by the end of the year with synthesist Jeremy Hicks as a temporary replacement for Smith. Following the recording, two performances were completed with the new material before Oder left the group due to conflicting responsibilities. During 2000 and 2001, Diviner remained a mostly dormant project while Morgan worked alone on outside projects including the soundtrack for a short film with artist Victor Faccinto and the music for two dance performances by Choreographer Karola Luttringhaus and her Alban Elved Dance company. These projects would lay much groundwork for later Diviner material. In the summer of 2001, Diviner was exhumed with the help of long time friends Alex Polzien and Will Huneycutt each bringing a unique new component to the sound. During this time, nearly three albums worth of new, more focused material was written and recorded. The group's first performance of new material in May of 2002 was well received. Diviner plan three releases this year, the first in late August.
