Artist History
Back in NYC where Eric aka Oolong first started playing records, he was
known to brew up a huge pot of oolong tea and play on the decks for hours.
NYC was a great place to start out, with a plethora of vinyl shops and more
musically talented people than possibly anywhere else in the world.
But before all that went down, Eric played the bass guitar for 7 years. He
was mixed up with an assortment of bands playing rock, funk & hardcore in
the Washington DC area. His most successful band "Vegan Death" came to a
tumultuous end when the lead guitarist exploded on stage (not really, he
just quit).
Soon after the band's breakup in 1998, Oolong moved to New York and began
scouring the record shops for great house music. Soon, his musical tastes
expanded and he began scouring the record shops for great downtempo tracks,
then for funky breaks. Early on in his career, he played various clubs and
parties in New York. Some of these locations include the Lansky Lounge,
Halcyon and NW3. But as Eric's tastes gravitated towards the west coast
house sounds, he knew it was time to move on...
In early 2001, he moved to San Francisco where he quickly landed a residency
at the Blind Tiger Lounge and then another at The Redwood Room. Soon after
he played at such venues as Skylark, Cloud 9, 111 Minna (Qoöl), Il Pirata,
Buzz 9 and the Tunnel Top with local djs like Norman Stradley, Didje Kelly,
Ellen Ferrato and dj Seven.
As a dj, Eric has always worked to keep his crowds moving with a constantly
morphing sound, mixing deep house, funky house, breakbeats, 2-step, and
tribal sounds into his sets. In smaller, more intimate settings, he can
also be found playing an organic mix or downtempo and hip-hop.
Currently, Eric has been playing more funky house and breakbeat tracks and
promoting his bi-monthly party Dig Deep. Dig Deep has been
running as a San Francisco house main-stay for 8 months and is currently
happening every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at Buzz 9.
As a producer, Oolong is relatively new to the trade. Although he has not
released any tracks on vinyl yet, you can be assured that his is working
hard tweakin' knobs and pressing buttons to put out a release as soon as
possible. Pulling from his roots as a bass player, Eric produces groovy,
bass-heavy sounds with eclectic samples and subtle vocals. Keep an eye out
for new releases in the next 3 months...
