Artist History
1995:
Vindicta rose from the ashes of a rather lame hobby-viking-metal band in the year of 1995. Vindicta's founders were Kenneth, Frode and Ørjan, three young lads from the city of Harstad, a small city in Northern Norway.
In the beginning the band played cover- songs of bands such as Mayhem, Darkthrone, Satyricon and others. The band was fascinated with the sonic/visual energy displayed by these bands, but being the young band they were, they didn't feel ready to start creating anything of their own just yet.
1996:
Sometime in 1996 Kenneth came up with a few riffs which they started working with. This experimenting led to the band deciding that the "alien" elements such as synthesizer and female vocals wouldn't fit their profile, therefore discarding them at an early stage. The aforementioned riffs later evolved into the song "And I arose from the underworld", Vindicta's first self- composed opus. The song was recorded. Kenneth then established contact with the French label Impure Creations Records. They were going to release a triple-CD compilation featuring 50 underground bands, and a copy of "And I arose from the underworld" was sent to France. The label agreed to put the track on the compilation CD, titled "Encyclopedia Pestilentia". Being rather dissatisfied with the result of the first recording of the song, the band decided to re-record it. Since they were rather low on cash, the band recorded the song on their own 4- track tape- recorder, and the result was a much more grim/"necro" sound, which the band at that time sought, and were pleased with. At the end of 1996, another guitarist, Trond, was added to the line-up
1997:
The band started rehearsing with the new guitarist, and did their first concert at a local rock exhibition in Harstad. They only played 3 songs, including "And I arose...". This made the spectators and the other members of the band aware of the Drummer's (Ørjan) potential, and a rather astonished audience (This was Harstad, and such music was rather unheard of ) kept asking how he could play that fast! But the band kept getting faster. Fueled by the feedback from the audience and the rush from performing, the band's main creative person, Kenneth, started making more riffs and arranging songs, giving the band something to work on. Later that year Vindicta had ready about four songs, but things were going slow due to some creative disagreements between Kenneth and the other guitarist, Trond.
1998:
Vindicta continued as it did the last half of 1997, but after a few months Trond left the band. They started looking for a new guitarist, and after a while Ida showed up, and was asked to join. She hadn't been playing the guitar for a very long time, but she seemed very talented, and she started rehearsing with the band on a regular basis. Then the demo- tape "Griminal" was recorded- it had all the elements of bad old- school black metal: Shitty sound, sreamy vocals and lots of playing errors. Later that year, the first local metal- exhibition was arranged in Harstad. Vindicta and some other bands went together to arrange a concert in a place called Sørvik, just south of Harstad. As for the band, the concert went ok, but Kenneth had got more and more fed up with the typical black metal scream vocals- the band needed something new/ different. Kenneth asked Frode to handle the vocals, and after a few rehearsals and little convincing, he agreed to do so. New songs were continously created/ rehearsed, and the cooperation within the band was smooth. There was only one problem about to appear- Frode and Kenneth had to do their initial military service. This led to a 9- month period of little activity within the band.
1999:
Some months before Frode and Kenneth finished their military service, Vindicta played again in Sørvik together with some other bands. People were amazed by the band's progress since Frode started doing the vocals. Later that year, Ørjan had to do his initial military service, too. Luckily, he got to do it in Harstad, which affected the band little. They managed to record their second demo "618" in their rehearsalplace.
2000:
Another gig was done in Sørvik, and the band took a small break before leaving for Narvik, The neighbouring town a few hours south of Harstad, to participate in a rock- exhibition there. Shortly after that concert Kenneth left Harstad to move to Tromsø, about three hours north of Harstad. The band arrived at the mutual agreement that they were having too good a time playing together to break it up just like that, and Tromsø isn't that far away anyway. Only about a month later, Vindicta went to a small place called Andenes, where about 50 amateur bands were featured in an annual "rock contest". Vindicta got the 2nd place, only beaten by one of Ida's other bands, De Gustibus. Draw the Curtains entered the fifth place, after a dissatisfactory gig. Vindicta's next gig, on Halloween by the way, was done at the opening night of the concert venue called Rocky, in Harstad. Other bands also featured were De Gustibus and Eternal Silence (black metal from Harstad).
2001:
Starting the 3rd of January, Vindicta attempted to record a new demo, but due to time- pressure, among other things, the result was plain bad. The band then experienced a several month long period of very little activity, due to different factors.
In August, Frode moves to Tromsø to study, and suddenly things start to happen again. Vindicta is asked to do support for Mayhem at the Polar Music Festival in Tromsø. The band agrees, of course, and despite having only three rehearsals since late February or so, the band do their greatest gig ever. Feedback from the audience was great, and some even claimed that Vindicta did a better performance than Mayhem.
2002:
A new demo was recorded in January. Vindicta played at "Vinterfestuka" in Narvik in March. The demo was mixed during the summer. A rehearsal actually took place in december.
2003:
New songs are under construction. There are plans for a studio-recording in late 2003. |
