Artist History
Dayna Malow is a Chicago based vocalist and
composer. Her debut album, Anywhere but here,
a collection of 11 original songs, was released
in October 2002 on Jabberwocky Records.
The title track of the album was already
chosen as a finalist in the Chick Singer Night
Songwriting Competition--meaning that the
executives at the WB and FOX considered it one
of the top 12 submissions. Therefore, the song,
"Anywhere but here" appears on a compilation
disc, The Sound of Women's Dreams. The CD is
distributed nationally by CSN and sold on
their website. (A second tune
"Remember Who Home Is" was a semifinalist
in the same competition.)
Anywhere but here is produced by
Chris Cash, who also co-wrote 3 of the album's
songs.
Dayna has spent many years mastering her art.
Those years started at The University of Miami,
where she was a member of the University's award
winning vocal group, Jazz Vocal I (JV1). While
a member, the group received a 1998 Downbeat
Award and also had the privilege of performing
with John Secada. Upon graduating, Dayna earned
a degree in Jazz Vocal Studies and Studio Music.
Once returning to Chicago, Dayna hit the music
scene hard. She became the lead female vocalist
of "Speakeasy Swing", appeared on VH-1 Rock
Across America, and was featured on Big Chicago
Records 1999 release Jump N Jive Chicago. She
then toured the Midwest as lead vocalist for
the Milwaukee based "Orphans" and opened for
national acts, including the Doobie Brothers
and John Hiatt, playing fairs and festivals
like Harley Davidson's "Hogfest" and Milwaukee's
world renowned "Summerfest". In late 2000, Dayna
was cast in the world premiere of the a capella
musical,"Klub Kokomo". The five-person Kokomo a
capella group performed nightly sets with Mark
Lindsay, former lead singer of Paul Revere and
the Raiders, backing him on a medley of solo
hits (Arizona, Indian Reservation) and Raiders
tunes. The group also performed with The Turtles,
appeared on WLS-TV's 190 North, WLS-AM's Roe and
Gary Show, and WJMK-AM's Dick Biondi Show.
Since the release of Dayna's new album she has
made great strides in her career. Music from her
CD has appeared on radio stations throughout the
country and as far as the Netherlands. She has
opened for artists such as Alana Davis, and
Michael Mcdermott, and will be a featured artist
this year's Chicago Country Music Festival.
Currently, Dayna is busy performing and
promoting her upcoming album and continues to
write and collaborate with other talented
composers, including Keith Uchima of
A&R Recording House and the above mentioned
Chris Cash.

Press Reviews
By Mike O'Cull of chicagogigs.com
Dayna Malow is a new face on the Chicago music
scene. She is a singer and songwriter but her
style is not based on and defined by her own
acoustic guitar playing like many others who
use those words to describe themselves. In fact,
this particular night she was strictly a singer,
leaving the instruments to her eight-piece band.
She is more country than folk, more contemporary
than classic. This show at Gunther Murphy’s was
the release party for her new CD, Anywhere But
Here. The record paints a picture of an artist
shooting for the airwaves of modern country
stations nationwide, which would seem to be an
attainable goal for Ms. Malow. She is a trained
vocalist and has a voice equal to many of the
big hit-making women of Nashville. More
importantly, she has the songs and production to
go with her vocal chops and seems to understand
what that area of the music business is looking
for. Make no mistake: there is nothing
alternative about her brand of country. Live
and on record, Malow is slick, tuneful, and
together and comes across as a lady in waiting
for her shot at the stars, rather than an aging
punk with a cowboy hat on like so many other
"country" artists in Chicago.
Gunther’s was packed to the ceiling by the time
Malow and her band took the stage. The band was
an expanded version of her normal lineup and
featured all the players that had contributed
to Anywhere But Here. They did an excellent job
of backing here up, although the small stage
left little room for Dayna to step out front
due to the sheer number of musicians on it.
The crowd seemed pretty familiar with the songs
already, which is always a good sign. Malow and
company ran through the music on the CD and got
much love in return from those assembled. Most
of her tunes are strong, but the best of the lot
was "Richness In My Life". This song has ‘hit’
written all over it and this reviewer can easily
imagine it blasting out of country fans’ car
radios all over the USA.
This night was a triumph for Malow and her band,
but, of course, much work is still in front of
her. It would be nice to see her catch on and
build a following here locally, but she is a
little more polished than most of the stuff
that gets popular here in punk-obsessed Chicago.
Malow may very well have to look outside the
area to really get her shot. The thing of it
is she is enough of a singer to make that shot
count when she gets it. Time will tell, as it
always does, but the future may find Dayna Malow
everywhere but here.
