    Artist description
A four piece band attempting to achieve "Pop, without the insult". The songs are short and sweet rock and roll primarily, with a distinctive knack for melody and intelligent lyrics. The 'two guitars, bass and drums' formula is complemented by piano, wurlitzer, tea and crackers, whatever it takes... Songs featured here range from full-band to 'stripped down' category. We like to think there's something here for everyone.
    Music Style
    alternative pop rock
    Musical Influences
Elvis Costello, the Kinks, Big Star, Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, and of course, Duke Ellington

    Artist History
In 1996, A. Mason, otherwise thought of as a drummer, formed a string trio with ex-Wilco/Uncle Tupelo instrumentalist Max Johnston, to do a brief tour with Michelle Shocked. The side effects were enormous, and eventually the Damn Rathers emerged. With perhaps the best rhythm section no money could buy - Tim Welch(of Paul K.'fame'), and Brian Arnett(from local faves 10 foot pole)- completed by Bob Burriss (a guitar player who can play honky and tonk), and well put songwriting, they are a melting pot of musical backgrounds... Currently looking for work in other states and states of mind, to be recording more soon...

    Press Reviews
"The band was at its best, however, when the mike was turned over to Mason....who stuck to just one instrument but more than made up for it with a richly melodic voice that made 'Cincinatti' and 'Once A Week' the standouts of the set."-No Depression Nov./Dec. '96
