Press Reviews
There are three distinct reasons why Shackleford’s as yet unreleased debut 8-track opus, Live Long and Be Rock Hard, deserves to one day be found in your possession, the least of all being that Captain Dan’s Pirate fixation has found immortality in audio form.
First of all, Shackleford are a band dedicated entirely to pure, goofy fun; quite simply a pleasant departure from the abundance of politically-driven bands which have long held a stranglehold over Saskatoon’s local scene. Not that there’s anything wrong with them, but a sliver of diversity within a scene as small as ours is a welcome breath of fresh air, strengthened incalculably by the fact that Shackleford are just as technical and tight as the few remaining other local bands who seem to be held in such high regards.
Second, Shackleford have somehow (most likely inadvertently) created what sounds like an unholy concoction between early TSOL and Iron Maiden, and somehow moulded it into a sound all their own. Even if you don’t care for it, it will raise your eyebrows for one reason or another.
Third, their polished rendition of the little-appreciated Indy Grab classic, “Roller-skater”. Maybe it’s just me, but such serves as reason enough to recommend this album to anyone who’s ever owned an Atari gaming system.
Their decision to record an eight-song album prior to ever playing a debut show (in fact, this recording has been around for three months short of a year now, and they’ve yet to take the stage) seems like a worthwhile tactic. Pick it up, allow yourself not to take life too seriously for about twenty minutes, and enjoy.
